@selfstyledsiren Yet Ann Jillian as Mae West didn’t work bc I’d seen several of MW’s movies already. By the mid-80s, with video rentals & cable, I could fill out my knowledge, but prior to 1981, biopics were (often unreliable) Cliff Notes for a film star’s career.

@selfstyledsiren Biopics once held greater allure. 35/40+ years ago it was difficult for the average person to view an actor’s complete filmography. They functioned as placeholders until the genuine article *finally* showed up at 3am, 1 night only. They attracted old fans & interested new ones.

@selfstyledsiren In retrospect, the ones that worked best for me were those depicting stars to whom I had no exposure. Ersatz Bankhead & Goddard piqued my interest in “Moviola.” Loni Anderson as Jayne Mansfield was fascinating until I saw the real deal.

@RodneyMarshall1 I’d wager “Sea Hunt” did more to establish the sport of recreational SCUBA diving than Cousteau. Those that came of age during “Sea Hunt’s” run always seem to mention Lloyd Bridges 1st, then Cousteau. They’re the kids who began diving, started diving businesses, inspired by LB.

@RodneyMarshall1 ZIV was an interesting outfit and its productions had a very raw, real quality with so many shot on location: “Highway Patrol,” “I Led 3 Lives,” “Men Into Space,” “Sea Hunt.” That had to be great training. They also looked great even though they were on a tight budget.
