National Police Commissioner Accused of R5 Million Bribe

South Africa’s top police officer, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, has been accused of accepting a R5 million bribe from football administrator and businessman Bobby Motaung.

The allegation was made today, Sunday by suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Daphney Manamela during a media briefing in Mbombela.

Manamela claimed the bribe allegedly shared with Major General Botsotso Moukangwe was paid to block her reinstatement and prevent the revival of fraud and corruption cases against Motaung linked to the controversial Mbombela Stadium tender.

The cases centre on a tender fraud investigation involving Motaung and others. Manamela also connected the matter to the 2010 murder of whistleblower Jimmy Mohlala, who exposed irregularities in the stadium’s construction. She cited alleged confessions from Major General Moukangwe as supporting evidence.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe described the claims as “very serious” and said they “cannot be taken lightly or ignored.” She confirmed the accusations will undergo the necessary investigative processes.

Neither Masemola nor Motaung has publicly responded to the claims. The development has sparked immediate concern about integrity at the highest levels of the South African Police Service.
