The first time I regretted being a woman was when I was 15 years old.

I was talking to my mom about freedom.
I told her, "When I finally leave this house, i will be free. No more chores. No more being told what to do."

She looked at me and said, "A woman is never truly free." She said, as a little girl, you are under your parents. Then you get married, and you are under your husband. He decides what you do, where you go, and how you live. And when you're old enough to be out of your husband's reach, you'll be under your children. They will take care of you, and they will make many of your decisions.

I remember asking, "Then when is a woman ever free?" She simply said,
"She isn't."

That day, I regretted being a woman.
But looking back now, I wish I could sit beside that fifteen-year-old girl, and even my mother, and say: Mommy you were wrong. Because freedom isn't something a father, husband, or child gives a woman. It's something she claims.

Today, I am a free woman.
I make my own choices. I belong to myself.
