day 8 of learning robotics from zero. did a bit of arduino in school but thats it, and @bot is basically my teacher. he explains, i do the physical part since ai cant do that yet :D
this week i picked up a soldering iron again for the first time since i was like 15. back then i soldered leds into my xbox 360 controllers and burned a fat black spot into my carpet when the iron fell down lol. so not my first time, but basically starting over
watched some videos, read the guide @bot wrote me, then soldered header pins onto a perfboard. first problem right away, the stock tip on my pinecil barely gets heat into the joint. solder only melted on the tip itself, not on the pin
@bot told me to use the side of the tip instead of the point and keep a little blob of solder on it so the heat transfers. way better after that. ended up with 13 pins, checked every one with the multimeter, all beep, no bridges. honestly went better than i expected
then desoldering. that was the real fight. no pump, just wick, flux and the pinecil. cut the header into single pins, added fresh solder, flux again and again, pulled with pliers and pushed from the top for minutes until one single pin finally came out. hole still full of solder
second try i cranked it to 370c, flux on, wick flat on the hole, side of the tip on top. suddenly it sucked everything up and the hole was clear
@bot says its mostly the pointy stock tip, too little contact so too little heat, and that i need a chisel tip
anyone here using a pinecil, do you struggle with the stock tip too or am i just bad at this? is the chisel tip actually worth it
robotics from zero update. ngl its pretty bland so far, and idk if anyone cares, but im logging it anyway so later i can look back at how boring it started
mostly multimeter basics. measured a coin cell, some resistors (463.8 ohm on a 470 one, so within tolerance), did continuity checks on my breadboard. left the meter in beep mode once and was confused why the numbers kept jumping lol
then got stuck right before soldering. @bot kinda failed my shopping list and never told me i need perfboards to solder on. or i just went too fast idk. ordered some, soldering starts this week
the plan @bot made is working great otherwise. i ask stuff, it explains it, and i do the physical part since it cant do that yet. curious if ai can actually replace school for this, well see at the end
real projects and videos soon. first one i want is automating my reverse osmosis system so it refills water by itself
starting robotics from zero
ai is getting crazy good. people are reverse engineering games / merging them and rebuilding whole apps with it, and this is just the start imo
once everyone has access to intelligence like that, being able to build software isnt an edge anymore. people will just build what they need themselves instead of paying for it. so where is the advantage then
ai can do almost anything on a screen but it cant do the physical work in the real world yet. so im going for a physical skill, feels like the safer bet in the long run. robotics is where both meet
did a bit of arduino in school, a fan that turned on above a set temperature. thats about it haha. so electronics basics first.
currently using @bot to get me back on track, it made me a 6 month plan in notion with exercises and answers my questions like a teacher. so far really happy with it
ill post what i build and break along the way. anyone else getting into robotics right now? how are you learning it
