I hate to get in on discourse like this but mf’er we have Daily Wire and Angel Studios getting conservative slop in theaters, you don’t get to give a Spielberg movie this kind of superlative.
DISCLOSURE DAY is, at worst, middling. Worst of 2020s is an insane take!!
This genuinely makes me feel like I’m going insane a bit because *usually* the critics aren’t that far off.
DIGGER is one of the best movies of the 2020s and DISCLOSURE DAY is one of the absolute worst movies of the 2020s imo.
Costco has $100 Nintendo gift cards for $80 (normally $90). They can also be used on Nintendo’s site for physical goods which makes the Switch 2 just $400. You will likely never get this good of a deal on hardware for years to come, so if you want one, get it now.
It really is a profound thing for a Toho-made Godzilla film to have had its world premiere in America, especially when you consider what that monster was always about. Watching MINUS ZERO in New York tonight was a quietly shocking experience. Loved the political boldness.
Last night was the first #NYFF screening of CLUB KID. As impressive as Jordan Firstman is as a debuting writer-director, I am increasingly knocked out by his performance: so natural and impulsive and heartbroken. I profiled him for @latimes in August. https://t.co/Nk5YLAzj5D
New name changes we’re about to see for the HBO Max app for the next two years:
• HBO Sky
• HBO Dance
• SKYDANCE HBO PLUS
• HBOMOUNT MAX
• SKYMAX HBO
• SKYBO MAX PLUS
• HB SKY
• HSKYBO
• HBO
• HBO MAX
In all my years of press screenings at NYFF, only twice has the audience burst into applause mid-movie. Once was Hit Man, today’s was for Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti in Jesse Eisenberg’s lovingly comic salute to community theater, The Debut.
@PatrickGratton@ryanmcquade77 Nope! What Ryan did was ultimately inappropriate and very few people will disagree with me on that. He made a private situation public for the sake of a subtweet. What he did was wrong and I stand by it.
@PatrickGratton@kamrynsfilm I did not bully her. She shared private information about Bryan without his consent about his mental health, which is private. She rightfully deleted them.
I do not deny Kamryn is upset by what’s happened, I am also upset. But that doesn’t mean we have to air dirty laundry.
Just gonna' throw out some scattered thoughts on my own experiences that might play into the recent debates going on on FT regarding written reviews, because these are things that have been on my mind over the last year:
I 100% sympathize with anyone who feels pressured to beef up their prose when it comes to their writing. Sometimes the best way to learn and improve is to read the work of others, and it can be daunting to see some people use their command of the written word with such proficiency that it makes you feel a little smaller when you try your hand at it. I spent years writing about elections and public opinion before I shifted to film criticism, and there is a huge difference in writing objectively about numbers and subjectively about art.
I don't think my early reviews read as well as my more recent ones. I've tried to put a little more work into them over time, and admittedly I've also tried to beef up my vocabulary. I confess have a thesaurus sitting right on the workstation I use for writing. There was a period though when I was so obsessed with trying to use "fancy" words that I felt like my own voice was getting lost, so I stopped trying so hard to force it.
Having more time and early access to films can do wonders for your writing. Unfortunately this year has been tough for me because I have a 7-month-old to take care of, and critics in my market barely get any screenings that give us enough time to write before a film releases. As a result, I haven't been able to write anywhere near as many reviews as I've wanted to, and even when I do, I rarely have the time to really work on them because I already feel the pressure to get them out ASAP now that the movie is in theaters.
I think my best review of the year so far has been 'The Odyssey', and that's because Universal actually screened it for critics in my market, giving me a couple of days to fine tune it. Otherwise I've really felt that my writing could be more proficient and prolific than it has been this year, but life happens and some of us only get so many opportunities.
All of this is to say that I don't have a hard opinion on whether the accusations did or didn't happen. The conversation around the ethics of the whole mess are probably best to talk about outside of this app. What I did think was wrong was someone outside the publication airing its dirty laundry and setting off the avalanche in which the pub had to respond.
But this whole situation ties into things that have been on my mind lately regarding the pressure in this space to get things out within a certain timeframe and compete with other pieces that feature some truly amazing writing.
My only advice to anyone interested in joining this space is to lean into your own voice and try not to compare yourself to others. Learn from, but don't copy. Take your time. Know your limits. Not everyone is going to sound like a Buckley and Vidal debate when making their case for or against a movie's quality. You'll find an audience if people believe you're just being yourself.
