5 mistakes you need to stop making on your statement of purpose for graduate school applications:

❌ Appear desperate:

Don't appear desperate to join graduate school.

Appear enthusiastic.

Prove your "Directed Enthusiasm"

Here's how⬇️

If you only talk about why YOU want to join graduate school & what YOU will gain...

IT is not SUFFICIENT to convince the committee.

Think of the reasons why a committee should hire you?

Most likely because they are looking for individuals who can contribute to the scientific knowledge in the domain concerned.

Read papers, abstracts, projects.

Prove how your prior knowledge & experience will help them look at problems from a newer angle never thought of before.

Or highlight questions, if investigated by dept/lab, will lead to discovery of important solutions.

They'll invest in you if they see benefit in you.

Simple.

❌ Not following the word limit.

The basic minimum they expect of you while applying is to follow their instructions.

If you can't properly follow rules while applying, you may not follow rules when admitted.

That's a red flag 🚩

❌ Write unrealistic aspirations.

No, you cannot help each and every individual in the world single-handedly.

If you mention your desire to transform the world, you're making lofty goals.

This is injurious in graduate school.

❌ Talk negatively about yourself:

Don't say you don't have the necessary knowledge or skills in your SoP even if you're changing fields.

Talk about how and why you're eager to learn and practice skills & technology required to succeed in graduate school.

You can demonstrate your interest in such skills (that you don't currently have but are desirable for the program) by showing your theoretical understanding & importance of the same.

This will help them believe that you're genuinely interested in learning those.

❌ End your statement with something like:

Thank you for reading my application.

I hope you will consider me for the position.

I am very grateful to apply to this program.

Big No. While it's not technically wrong to say these things, but you should replace it with more valuable text.

Consider every line of your SoP a sacred space.

Don't waste it by stating obvious hopes.

Use it to show what you've researched about the program & what you hope to imbibe from them or how your diverse experiences can add to their community.
