Vinícius Júnior has been called a monkey so many times in his career that he knows the word in five languages. On Tuesday night in Lisbon, he heard it again.

You may have heard about it. But in the case that you haven't, I'll tell you what happened.

So Vinícius Júnior scored a worldie against Benfica last night. He curled it top bins in the 50th minute and then he danced by the corner flag and everything went sideways.

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni came over, covered his mouth with his shirt, and allegedly said something. Vinícius immediately ran to referee François Letexier and reported it. The word he claimed to hear was "mono." Monkey. Again.

Letexier stopped the match. He crossed his arms above his head in an X. That is the "FIFA No Racism" gesture, the official signal introduced in 2024 that triggers the anti-discrimination protocol. The game stopped for about 10 minutes. Vinícius walked off and his teammates followed. Mourinho even tried to calm him down. Eventually play resumed.

That was the FIFA Anti-racism protocol working exactly as designed. When a racist incident occurs, as the referee, you stop the match, acknowledge the abuse, let things cool down. And if it continues, you suspend again. If it persists, you abandon the game entirely.

But here is where it gets tricky. Prestianni covered his mouth. There was no audio recording. No cameras caught what he said. Vinícius says he heard "mono."

Mbappé backed him up and reportedly confronted Prestianni directly on the pitch. Valverde said after the game, "It's a shame that with so many cameras, it wasn't recorded. You cover your mouth to say something."

Prestianni was not eventually carded. He played on. He was subbed off in the 81st minute and got a round of applause from the Benfica fans.

So what does the protocol actually achieve? It paused the game. It sent a signal. It gave Vinícius a platform to report the abuse. But without evidence, there is no punishment. Just a 10 minute break and then business as usual.

Vinícius posted on Instagram afterwards: "Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts over their mouths to demonstrate how weak they are. But they have, on their side, the protection of others who, theoretically, have the obligation to punish. I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. On the other hand, just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose."

That last part hits the core issue. The protocol empowers victims to stop the match. That is progress. And I appreciate it. But if the system cannot gather evidence or enforce consequences for actions or inactions, then what is it actually doing? Vinícius got booked for his celebration. Prestianni got nothing for a racist remark.

UEFA will investigate. They have to. But investigations without audio or video proof rarely go anywhere. The burden of proof falls on Vinicius. And that is nearly impossible when someone deliberately covers their mouth.

So the question is not whether the protocol was followed. It was. The question is whether following the protocol actually changes anything when evidence is this hard to capture.

That is the gap we are still trying to close. It's progress. We'll take it. But more has to be done.
