@GetSpectrum Why can’t I get Spectrum to check my lines outside without an appointment? I travel and problems have always been outside not in the house. Do better!
Corn:
- 160-200 bushels of corn per acre
- 2.7 gallons of ethanol per bushel
- 1 acre = 432-540 gallons of ethanol (this is not directly gas, but close enough)
Solar:
- 100kW per acre (standard conservative estimate)
- .3 production factor (8 hours of useful sun on avg, varies wildly by location)
- 100kW*365*24h*.3 = 262,800kWh
At 20mpg vs. 2mi/kWh:
Ethanol: 10,800mi
Solar: 525,600mi
That had me thinking... what is the cost delta?
~$1k to produce an acre of corn
~$1/gal to turn it into ethanol
So ~$1500/acre yearly
$1500 / 500gal = $3/gal, $0.15/mi
If we assume the 2022 NREL cost of solar *with battery storage* is accurate at $2/W, that's $200k in solar panels
If we amortized over 10 years, with 5% interest, that is $25k/yr.
$25k / 262,800kWh = $0.095/kWh, $0.048/mi
This F150 costs 3x as much to drive on corn as it does solar and batteries
WHY ARE WE MAKING CORN ETHANOL!? (Something I've hated for decades, but not for this specific reason until now)
