For decades the Arab world has read Somaliland through the interests of others. Israel, Ethiopia, the UAE, Washington. Rarely through Somaliland itself.
Bashe Awil Omar @BasheOmar1 on the story everyone keeps missing, and why understanding Somaliland should begin with Somalilanders.

(We post this tweet because Taiwan and Somaliland have close ties. #Somaliland is one of twelve countries worldwide that recognize #Taiwan as an independent country!)
Recognising Somaliland represents not just the ‘right’ thing to do, but enlightened self-interest: Somaliland will provide security for Britain in a strategically region, a growing market for British goods, and an important bulwark against terror.

UAE Official: Saudi Criticism Everywhere, Muslim Brotherhood Our Enemy
Senior UAE official @Dralnoaimi said Saudi Arabia criticizes the UAE on everything:
“Even if something bad happened on the Moon, they’d blame us.”
He added that the Muslim Brotherhood is an enemy, and UAE success limits its influence.

"They are basically declaring WAR"
US senator Lindsey Graham just dropped a bombshell on the Saudi-UAE rift. He’s calling out Saudi Arabia for moving "backward" and attacking the UAE for its peace-building efforts.
Senator Graham confirms what many of us suspected: Saudi Arabia’s aggression toward the UAE isn't about Yemen or Sudan. It’s a targeted attack on the UAE's strategic alliances and the Abraham Accords. "They are basically declaring WAR"
Is Saudi moving backward while the rest of the region looks forward?
Turkey uses development aid, religious ties, and business investment to expand its global influence — especially in Muslim-majority countries. Turkey structures its foreign policy primarily around national interest and Somalia is part of that broader foreign policy strategy.
SPEECH VERSION — “OUR FUTURE IS OURS”
Brothers and sisters of Somaliland, People of the Horn of Africa, And friends across our continent.
Ottawa-17 February 2026.
Today, I stand before you with a simple truth: our future belongs to us.
Not to Ankara, not to Mogadishu, not to any foreign capital to us.
For more than thirty years, the people of Somaliland have lived with dignity, with resilience, and with unshakable determination. While others collapsed into conflict, we built peace. While others fell into chaos, we built institutions. While others chose violence, we chose democracy.
And yet, the world has placed us under the shadow of isolation — a shadow not earned by our actions, but imposed upon us for refusing to abandon our identity, our stability, and our sovereignty.
Why Erdoğan opposes Israel’s move?
Sovereignty and precedent: Türkiye publicly supports Somalia’s territorial integrity and sees recognition of Somaliland as setting a destabilizing precedent, language mirrored by Egypt and the AU’s concerns about stability.
Strategic footprint: Israel’s step potentially complicates Türkiye’s expanding role (security cooperation, energy projects, and naval presence) around Somali waters and ports. Recognition could shift diplomatic alignments in Berbera and along the Gulf of Aden, where multiple actors compete for access and influence.
Geopolitical rivalry: The move came amid sharply deteriorated Türkiye–Israel ties and Red Sea tensions; many outlets read Israel’s recognition as a regional gambit that Ankara would resist rhetorically and diplomatically.
Let me be clear: no country has the right to dictate the destiny of Somaliland.
Not Turkey. Not Somalia. Not any state claiming to protect “regional stability” while ignoring the stability we ourselves created with our own hands.
We hear statements from foreign leaders saying what is “good” for Somaliland, what “benefits” the Horn of Africa, and what we should or should not become. But these voices do not speak for us. They do not live our reality. They do not carry our history. They have not walked through the trials we have endured.
Only the people of Somaliland have that right.
Every nation defends its interests , that is the nature of geopolitics. But what we reject, firmly and without apology, is the idea that Somaliland’s people must sacrifice their rights so others may protect theirs.
We reject the belief that our sovereignty is a bargaining chip.
We reject the assumption that our dreams must wait for someone else’s approval.
We reject the pressure, the interference, and the dismissive tones of those who seem to forget that Somaliland is not a void to be filled, it is a nation that has already stood.
Let no one mistake our calm for weakness. Somaliland is peaceful because we chose peace. Somaliland is democratic because we chose democracy. Somaliland is stable because we built stability.
And if the world refuses to acknowledge that , then the world must confront a reality it has long underestimated:
Somaliland’s identity is unshakable. Somaliland’s sovereignty is undeniable. And Somaliland’s future is unstoppable.
We do not ask for permission to exist.
We do not request validation to stand.
We do not need foreign powers to define our worth.
To our brothers and sisters across Africa:
We share a continent shaped too often by outside influence. Let us remind ourselves , and the world , that African futures are written by African people.
To the international community:
Respect the will of Somaliland’s people.
Respect our stability.
Respect our right to chart our own course.
And to the people of Somaliland:
Stand firm. Stand united. Stand proud.
We have carried our nation through hardship, isolation, and uncertainty , yet we remain unbroken.
Our message is clear, unwavering, and rooted in justice:
Somaliland’s future will be decided by Somaliland’s people. Not by foreign interests. Not by regional politics. Not by anyone who attempts to deny us our place in the world.
May our unity guide us.
May our courage sustain us.
And may our determination secure the recognition and respect our nation deserves.
Thank you. Long live Somaliland.
