Preserving documentary heritage means safeguarding knowledge, memory and history for future generations. 📜

Historian Dr Abdul Latif Abu Hashem and heritage researcher Haneen Al-Amasi have been named laureates of the 2026 @UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize for their work to safeguard Gaza’s manuscript heritage.

Their efforts include the digitisation of more than 25,000 pages of endangered manuscripts from the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, with support from the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme, as well as the establishment of Gaza’s first specialised manuscript restoration laboratory.

Established in 2004, the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize recognises outstanding contributions to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage as part of UNESCO’s #MemoryOfTheWorld Programme.
