People on here keep telling me, “Stop bringing up RACE when you talk about the WNBA and Caitlin Clark.”

No.

Race is part of this conversation, and pretending it never plays a role doesn’t make the conversation more honest.

I’m a Black man. I know how real the feeling of being overlooked, undervalued, or watching someone else receive recognition you believe they didn’t earn can be.

And I believe some of the resentment toward Caitlin Clark comes from exactly that.

There are people who genuinely don’t like her game. Fine. Basketball is subjective.

But there are also people who clearly resent the fact that a young white woman entered a predominantly Black league and almost immediately became its biggest attraction, received enormous media attention, brought in new fans, and was treated by many as the face of the WNBA.

To me, some of the basketball criticism feels like a cover for a much deeper argument about race, recognition, and who people believe “deserves” to represent this league.

And yes, I think the Caitlin Clark–Angel Reese rivalry helped intensify that conversation. Their college rivalry became bigger than basketball, and racial narratives surrounding the two fan bases became part of the story. Once that happened, people started choosing sides for reasons that had very little to do with what happened between the lines.

But there’s another side of this that bothers me too:

STOP ACTING LIKE TOXIC FANDOM STARTED WITH CAITLIN CLARK FANS.

Sports fans have been disrespectful, irrational, tribal and completely out of control forever. NBA fans do it. NFL fans do it. Soccer fans do it. College fans do it.

That doesn’t excuse anybody’s behavior. It just means pretending toxicity is uniquely a “Caitlin Clark fan problem” is ridiculous.

I troll. I talk trash. I make jokes. Everybody who follows me knows that.

But when I strip all of that away, I genuinely think this entire situation is sad.

We are watching Caitlin Clark do incredible things. We’re watching other talented players across the WNBA do incredible things too.

You don’t have to tear one woman down to celebrate another.

You don’t have to turn every basketball argument into a racial war.

Sometimes we should be able to appreciate greatness while it’s happening.

I’m ranting at this point, but those are my thoughts.

The WNBA tried to tear Caitlin Clark down, since game 1 of her career there has been an emphasis on “let’s rough her up”. And because of that.. she came back stronger. Bigger, a true three-level scorer, still bending defences and now guess what. A LOCKDOWN DEFENDER.
