કેટલીક સામાન્ય ગુજરાતી અટકો:
'મોદી' શબ્દ મધ્યયુગ દરમિયાન હિન્દી અને મરાઠી ભાષામાંથી ગુજરાતી ભાષામાં આવ્યો. તેનો અર્થ કરિયાણાનો વેપારી થાય છે. તે હિન્દુ, મુસ્લિમ અને પારસી કરિયાણાના વેપારીઓની અટક બની. તે ગુજરાતના સામાન્ય વર્ગ (જેમ કે જૈન વણિક, હિન્દુ વણિક, લોહાણા, પારસી વગેરે) અને ઓ.બી.સી. (જેમ કે ઘાંચી વગેરે) સમુદાયોની અટક છે.
'શાહ' એ ફારસી શબ્દ છે; તેનો એક અર્થ પ્રમાણિક અને વિશ્વસનીય વ્યક્તિ થાય છે. આ શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ બેંકર, શાહુકાર અને મોટા વેપારી માટે થતો હતો. ગુજરાતમાં મુસ્લિમ શાસન દરમિયાન તે જૈન વણિક અને હિન્દુ વૈષ્ણવ વણિકની અટક બની. બધા શાહ જૈન હોતા નથી; તેઓ ધર્મની દ્રષ્ટિએ હિન્દુ કે મુસ્લિમ પણ હોઈ શકે છે. ગુજરાતમાં 'શાહ' અટક ફારસી શબ્દ 'શાહ' પરથી ઉતરી આવી છે, કારણ કે મધ્યયુગમાં ૪૫૪ વર્ષના મુસ્લિમ શાસન દરમિયાન ફારસી એ ગુજરાતની સત્તાવાર ભાષા હતી. હિન્દી પ્રદેશો કે રાજ્યોમાં 'સાહૂ' (Sahu) અટક પ્રાકૃત શબ્દ 'સાહૂ' પરથી ઉતરી આવી છે, જે સંસ્કૃત શબ્દ 'સાધુ' પરથી બનેલો છે.
'ગાંધી'નો અર્થ કરિયાણાનો વેપારી અથવા મસાલા અને કરિયાણાનો વેપાર કરનાર વ્યક્તિ થાય છે. ગુજરાતના હિન્દુ, જૈન, મુસ્લિમ અને પારસી સમુદાયોની કેટલીક જ્ઞાતિઓમાં તે વ્યવસાય-આધારિત અટક છે. મહાત્મા ગાંધી ગુજરાતી હિન્દુ વૈષ્ણવ મોઢ વણિક હતા. તેઓ જૈન વણિક નહોતા.
'પટેલ' અથવા 'પાટીલ'નો અર્થ સરદાર અથવા સમુદાય કે જ્ઞાતિના વડા/નેતા થાય છે. ગુજરાતના હિન્દુ અને મુસ્લિમ સમુદાયોમાં તેનો અટક તરીકે ઉપયોગ થાય છે. ૨૦૦૦ વર્ષ પહેલાં, પાટીદાર પટેલ મારવાડથી ગુજરાત આવ્યા હતા અને સૌપ્રથમ સાબરમતી અને મહી નદીઓ વચ્ચેના ચરોતર પ્રદેશમાં સ્થાયી થયા હતા. ત્યારબાદ તેઓ સમગ્ર ગુજરાતમાં ફેલાયા.
'દેસાઈ' શબ્દનું મૂળ સંસ્કૃતમાં છે. તેનો અર્થ જમીનની ભેટના માલિક અથવા રાજ્યને આપેલી સેવાઓ બદલ શાસક દ્વારા આપવામાં આવેલી જમીનની આવક મેળવનાર વ્યક્તિ થાય છે. ગુજરાતમાં હિન્દુ બ્રાહ્મણ, નાગર, રબારી, જૈન વણિક અને મુસ્લિમ સમુદાયોમાં આ અટક જોવા મળે છે.
'મહેતા' શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ જૂના સમયમાં ગુજરાતીમાં શિક્ષક, હિસાબનીશ (એકાઉન્ટન્ટ), લહિયા (લેખક) અને કાર્યાલયના કારકુન (ક્લાર્ક) માટે થતો હતો. આવા વ્યવસાયિકો માટે તે એક અટક બની ગઈ. જૂના સમયમાં ગુજરાતીમાં 'દોશી' શબ્દ કાપડના વેપારી કે વિક્રેતા માટે વપરાતો હતો; પાછળથી તે કાપડના વેપારીઓ અને તેમના વંશજોની અટક બની ગઈ.

India is finally shedding that old hesitation. We hit back across borders now, and we don't beg for peace. But it has to remain our permanent default: no talks, no concessions, only offensive defence.

The hysteria over FCRA tells you precisely why India needs FCRA.

Follow the argument and then follow the money.

India is saying something extraordinarily simple: if money enters this country from a foreign source, India has the sovereign right to know who sent it, who ultimately controls it, where it is being spent and for what purpose.

What exactly is objectionable about that?

Around 16,200 registered organisations received nearly ₹23,000 crore in foreign contributions in 2024–25 alone.

So please spare us the fiction that the FCRA Bill will “shut down civil society”.

What is being tightened is accountability.

And suddenly there is panic.

We are told regulating foreign-funded NGOs is an attack on democracy.

Since when did democracy mean that an unelected organisation financed from another country acquires a constitutional right to operate without rigorous scrutiny?
