The other day in Yaba, a man stood in the middle of the road collecting ₦200 for a load he never carried. When I asked him what the money was for, he couldn't explain. So I asked, "Ise wo le se ti e fi gba 200 naira?" (What work did you do to collect ₦200?)

It was ridiculous. He threatened that his people would come and beat me if I didn't pay. I told him, "Ko wa na mi, amo e ma leti so fun mi ni idi ti mo ma fi san 200 naira." (Come and beat me now, but you'll still have to tell me why I should pay ₦200.)

Then everyone around started begging me to just pay. So I turned to them and asked, "Why are you all paying this ₦200?" They said, "Revenue." Okay, revenue for what? What is it used for?

Guess what? Nobody could answer.

They all knew paying that money was unnecessary, yet they keep paying it.

This is the exact same economic gospel preached before the fuel subsidy removal. We were promised efficiency & instead, we got widespread poverty. You cannot financialise a public university system in a developing nation.

The new minimum wage is N70,000 a month(exactly N840,000 a year). How many Nigerian families can afford N1 million in tuition? Suggesting we hike fees & just cycle the funds back into "scholarships" is literally rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

The current crop of leaders pushing for these fees are the direct beneficiaries of Nigeria's golden age of education. They received free tuition, meal tickets, & stipends. Now that it is time to build the next generation, they are feeding them with lectures on economics.

Look at Europe. Several nations offer completely free university tuition to their citizens & sometimes even to foreigners. They do this b/c they understand that a highly educated populace is a structural economic necessity, not a luxury product for the "elite".

You cannot drag a country into the 21st century without mass education. After the Century of Humiliation, China aggressively funded education & sent thousands abroad to master engineering & science. You do not industrialise by pricing your youth out of the classroom. That's the same China we are using as a yardstick today.

Nigeria(ns) treats education like a burden rather than the sole pathway to industrialisation.
