LAGOS PIONEERS DIGITAL SHIFT IN ADULT EDUCATION, TRAINS FACILITATORS ON INNOVATIVE METHODS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING 

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tertiary Education's Agency for Mass Education, has successfully concluded a crucial capacity-building programme, themed “Empowering Lifelong Learning: Innovative Strategies for Adult Learning Facilitation.” 

The landmark event brought together adult education facilitators from across the state, equipping them with modern, technology-driven strategies essential for combating illiteracy and expanding lifelong learning opportunities for Lagos residents.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesanwo, Director of the Agency for Mass Education, expressed profound gratitude to the participants and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating adult illiteracy in the state. She emphasised the critical need for facilitators to embrace digital tools and modern teaching methodologies to ensure the delivery of impactful education that aligns with changing global trends.

Dr. Olugbenga Ayoola, Permanent Secretary of the Parastatals Monitoring Board, represented by Mrs. Oparinde Adenike, commended the agency's dedication to championing adult literacy. He described the programme as a welcome step toward achieving the state’s vision of an educated and empowered populace, highlighting the Agency for Mass Education’s commitment, discipline, and forward thinking.

Additionally, Mrs. Sophie Oyenike from the Library Board encouraged facilitators to leverage the extensive resources available in state libraries.

The academic session commenced with an insightful lecture from Dr. Luqman Hussein, Associate Professor at Lagos State University of Education. His presentation, “Modernising Adult Education: Innovative Teaching Methods and Digital Literacy Integration,” explored the future of the sector, urging facilitators to adopt flexible, technology-enhanced, and learner-centred teaching models. 

He stressed the importance of making learning accessible, engaging, and relevant to adults from diverse backgrounds, while also calling on government and NGOs for further support in this digital transition.

The learning continued with a deep dive into pedagogy by Mrs. Jola Okebiorun, Associate Professor at the University of Lagos. Her session focused on understanding adult learners’ needs, motivations, and goals, emphasising that their rich life experiences must shape the teaching approach.

In a holistic approach to capacity building, the programme also addressed the critical issue of facilitator wellbeing.

Mrs. Silifat Giwa, a specialist from the Lagos State Employee Wellness Centre, anchored a session on mental health awareness and self-care. This segment provided facilitators with practical steps to manage stress, maintain emotional balance, and ensure they remain mentally equipped to sustain an effective and supportive learning environment for their students.

The successful event drew to a close with final remarks from Mrs. Seriki Ibukunolu, Director of Mass Literacy. She commended the Ministry of Tertiary Education and all planning agencies for their dedication and flawless execution of the programme. 

Praising the Agency for Mass Education for spearheading initiatives that continuously uplift both adult learners and facilitators across Lagos State, Seriki
extended profound gratitude to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, acknowledging his commitment to education as the principal driving force behind the agency’s achievements.
