The problem began in the Western Region where Awolowo was locked in a power tussle with Ladoke Akintola. Then Awolowo introduced 'Operation Wetie', which he used to burn Yorugbas alive, incinerate vehicles and raze down buildings.

As a result, the terrorist Awolowo was arrested by Tafawa Balewa's government and locked up at Calabar Prison.

It was from there that Awolowo plotted to overthrow the government of Tafawa Balewa and install himself as president of the Republic. More than 4 Yorugba military personnel participated actively in the coup.

As instructed by Awolowo, the coup plotters brutally killed all of Awolowo's political enemies, chief among them Sir Ahmadu Bello (who was the de facto prime minister) and the Prime Minister himself, Tafawa Balewa.
