It is shocking how the ineptitude of the Cincinnati Reds has flown under the radar for so long.
Every single professional team on this list has advanced in the playoffs more recently than the Cincinnati Reds.
You want historically bad seasons? You got it. You want middling seasons to nowhere? You got it. You want soul crushing playoff collapses? You got it.
They check all the boxes but somehow, someway, they are never mentioned.
I don't want to bum anyone out, but at the trade deadline in 2023, the Reds were 59-49 and in first place. They made no meaningful moves to try to make the playoffs. Then-GM Nick Krall later said he had no regrets about that.
In the nearly-three seasons since that trade deadline, the Redlegs have gone 222-238.
I know I have said this in a roundabout way nearly 1000 times at this point but I genuinely cannot believe just how poorly the Reds have mismanaged this “young core.”
In 2023 the Reds “young core” looked something like: Greene, Lodolo, Abbott, Elly, McLain, Steer, Benson, CES, Marte, Stephenson, India.
For the next month we are going to be talking about trading Lodolo/Stephenson and if/when they do that it will pretty much mark the end of that era of young core.
4 of those 11 will be gone (India, Stephenson, Lodolo, CES). 2 of those guys stink (McLain/Benson). 1 guy we have no clue on (Marte) and then 4 guys who you feel like you have a pretty good grasp on what they are ranging from solid to star (Elly, Hunter, Steer, Abbott).
I just can’t help but sit and think how fucking passive the Reds were toward this group. They didn’t take a swing to extend any of them besides 1, they didn’t try to flip any of them for a big name, they didn’t spend big money to supplement them.
They just gave out a bunch of mid tier contracts to average veterans to come in guide this group through. No real risk. Never once putting your chips to the center. Just 10 million dollars here. 15 million dollars there, and a bunch of guys you can cut bait with 2 years later.
The gross part is? Those guys mostly panned out! 11 players. You have clear hits on Elly, Hunter, Abbott, Lodolo. You have 2 solid guys in Stephenson and Steer. You have up and down from Marte. And 4 floppish guys (to their own degree) in McLain, Benson, CES, India. That’s a pretty good hit rate! And in the other hits you have had (Burns, Friedl, Stewart) and you are left wondering what the fuck?
I don’t even know what I’m getting at. I’m just laying in bed wondering to myself why they just sat back and did NOTHING for years? Zero bold moves in 3 years with this group! And we sit through a morgue of a summer with another sell off impending.
This is a colossal failure. One that can be will remembered mostly by a death of a thousand failed small moves, but will remember it most by their unwillingness to be bold.
This will be a circulating narrative that I strongly disagree with.
Elly had been dealing with a groin injury last year, not hamstring (what he came out with today).
He scored from 1st, literally today. He looked great today. Not everything has to be blamed on someone. It sucks he’s hurt. Hope it’s best case scenario and move on. No denying how big of a loss it’d be. Guys gotta step up while he’s out.
@CBoxSports I was scoring the game, and literally wrote in my K before the first pitch was thrown to Stephenson. Absolute comedy that it happened as quickly and as dominant as it did😂
