@calif_io@lcfr_hax Should I be on iOS 27.1 new Build (24A94425) or iOS 27.1 old Build (24A94232)?
Depending on the answer, I would either stay on the older 27.1 build or update to the current 27.1 build.
This is what YouTube playback looks like for NathanLR on iOS 16.6.1 with an iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB:
PS: A developer from Relaxin and I found that audiomxd experiences high load even when the device isn't jailbroken. I’m going to run another test this evening. I have the Relaxin jailbreak active, so I’ll use YouTube Premium and see how audiomxd behaves.
@ilearn_it@82Flex So, on NathanLR and an iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 16.6.1, high CPU usage during background playback is definitely not observed. With NathanLR, I'm seeing 2–3%. In that case, maybe the issue lies with Dopamine...
@ilearn_it Thanks! You confirm my observation. It doesn't matter what audio is playing in the background, either. Audiomxd shows high usage. @82Flex Someone is confirming it here once again.
I did another comparison on a non-jailbroken device using the same modified YouTube Plus IPA (5.2b4) on 17.3.1.
While I can’t monitor individual system processes without a jailbreak, I measured the overall CPU usage using System Info under the same test scenario.
The overall CPU usage is noticeably lower on the non-jailbroken device than on the Relaxin device during background playback.
This doesn’t prove that Relaxin is the cause, but it does suggest that the jailbreak environment may introduce additional overhead during background media playback.
If there’s a more accurate way you’d recommend to profile this on a non-jailbroken device, I’d be happy to test it.
Hi everyone,
I've been doing some testing regarding YouTube background playback on Relaxin (iOS 17.3.1) and noticed what appears to be excessive CPU usage and battery drain.
What I tested
Original App Store YouTube app
Multiple YouTube IPA versions
Different background playback tweaks (.deb packages)
YTLite from Dan's repo
The behavior is consistent across different YouTube versions and background playback tweaks, so it doesn't seem to be caused by a specific YouTube build.
Internal testing
During my testing, I noticed that when YouTube is playing in the background, the Dynamic Island / Now Playing animation remains active. This animation appears to contribute significantly to the increased battery drain.
As a test, I completely disabled the Dynamic Island, and this alone reduced the overall CPU usage by approximately 10–15% on Relaxin.
However, even with the Dynamic Island disabled, audiomxd and backboardd still consume an unusually high amount of CPU whenever YouTube is playing in the background.
For comparison:
Relaxin (iOS 17.3.1): audiomxd and backboardd remain relatively high during background playback.
NathanLR (iOS 16.6.1): the same scenario results in only about 2–3% CPU usage for these processes.
This makes me think there may be something in Relaxin's handling of background audio, media sessions, or SpringBoard/Dynamic Island interactions that isn't behaving as expected.
Has anyone else observed similar behavior, or is this already a known issue? @Lakr233@82Flex@roothideDev
@82FLex That's a fair point. My intention wasn't to claim that iOS 16 and iOS 17 should have identical CPU usage.
I only mentioned it because it was the closest reference I had available.
My main concern is that, on iOS 17.3.1 (15PM), 17.2.1 (14PM) and 17.0 (15PM) with Relaxin, audiomxd consistently reaches around 12% CPU and backboardd around 3% whenever YouTube is playing in the background, regardless of the YouTube version or background playback tweak used.
If comparing with iOS 16 isn't meaningful, that's completely fine. In that case, should audiomxd and backboardd reaching these CPU levels on iOS 17.3.1 be considered normal, or does it indicate something worth investigating?
@82Flex
Thanks for the clarification regarding CocoaTop. I installed htop as recommended and repeated my tests.
The results suggest that this is not just a CocoaTop reporting issue.
Test setup:
Relaxin on iOS 17.3.1
Original App Store YouTube
Multiple YouTube IPA versions
Different background playback tweaks (.deb packages), including YTLite
The behavior is consistent regardless of the YouTube version or background playback tweak used.
Results while YouTube is playing in the background (measured with htop):
audiomxd: ~12% CPU
backboardd: ~3% CPU
YouTube: ~7% CPU
As soon as YouTube is completely closed, both audiomxd and backboardd immediately return to their normal CPU usage.
I also noticed that the Dynamic Island / Now Playing animation contributes significantly to the overall CPU usage. Disabling it reduces the total CPU usage by roughly 10–15%, although audiomxd and backboardd still remain much higher than expected.
For comparison, I performed the exact same test using htop on my NathanLR (iOS 16.6.1) device as well. Under the same test conditions, audiomxd is typically around 2–3% CPU.
Based on these tests, it appears that the excessive CPU usage is specifically related to background media playback rather than being a CocoaTop reporting issue.
Is this a known issue, or is there anything else you would like me to test?

@onejailbreak_ So, AppSync isn't working on 17.3.1 @Relaxin JB. I can't install .ipas via Filza. Do you have a specific Relaxin .deb variant? Or is it the .deb from Karen from 2025?
