I think this is the part of Caitlin Clark fandom that people outside Iowa sometimes don't understand.

Iowa is a small state. No pro teams. You grow up there, you're a Hawkeye for life.

We don't expect national championships. Our players just become family.

And Caitlin?

She's FROM Iowa.

She could've gone anywhere in the country. She chose Iowa. And for four years, we watched this kid from West Des Moines do things we'd never seen before.

Logo threes. Insane passes. Scoring records. Kinnick. Carver losing its fucking mind. Two Final Fours. Two national championship games.

She made being an Iowa fan feel like being at the center of the sports universe.

Now she's in the WNBA.

And there's SO much noise.

MVP debates. GOAT debates. Championships. Hot takes. Social media drama. People who love her. People who seemingly wake up every morning looking for a reason to hate her.

And here's the thing:

A lot of us Iowa CC fans just don't give a shit. 😂

Never wins a WNBA MVP?

She's still the GOAT to us.

Never wins a WNBA championship?

She's still the GOAT to us.

Because we've already got four years of memories that nobody can ever take away.

Everything she's doing in the W now?

We're enjoying the hell out of it.

The rest is background noise.

We rode with our girl when she wore IOWA across her chest.

We'll ride with her wherever this thing goes.

My issue has NEVER been whether A’ja Wilson, Olivia Miles, Napheesa Collier or the other stars of this league can play. They’re great basketball players.

My issue is the completely different standard Caitlin Clark appears to face from certain corners of WNBA media.

Monica McNutt. Andraya Carter. Chiney Ogwumike. Jemele Hill. Swin Cash. Sydney Colson. Former players. Analysts. Talking heads.

Different people, different opinions — but collectively, Clark’s coverage too often feels like an endless search for the next reason to minimize what we’re watching.

Caitlin dominates? Talk about turnovers.

She puts up historic production? Find the flaw.

She drives enormous audiences? Debate whether she’s REALLY the face of the league.

She takes heavy contact? Talk about her complaining instead of asking why the whistle appears inconsistent.

Meanwhile, another superstar gets similar production and suddenly we’re discussing greatness, dominance, MVP and legacy.

THAT is what people are tired of.

And let’s stop pretending Caitlin Clark appointed herself the face of anything.

THE PUBLIC DID THAT.

She didn’t tell millions of people to watch. She didn’t tell fans to buy tickets. She didn’t tell television networks to put the WNBA front and center. She played basketball, and an enormous audience followed her into this league.

Instead of embracing that reality, too much of the conversation has become ANYBODY BUT CAITLIN.

And officiating deserves scrutiny too. When fans repeatedly watch Clark absorb significant contact without a whistle while watching other stars receive calls on considerably less obvious contact, asking for consistency isn’t persecution — it’s asking the league to explain its standard.

This is bigger than one MVP debate.

It’s about why Caitlin Clark seemingly has to prove her greatness OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN while everybody else’s greatness is allowed to simply exist.

Critique her game. That’s sports.

But when criticism becomes the default response to virtually everything she accomplishes, don’t be surprised when millions of fans start questioning the people controlling the microphone.

Caitlin Clark doesn’t need the media to manufacture her greatness.

The performances, attention and impact speak loudly enough.

She just needs them to stop grading it on a different damn scale. @WNBA #espn #wnba

It’s not affordable housing.

Confusion is making socialism appeal to those who never lived it.

A formal request to Cathy Engelbert, the WNBA and the WNBPA:

Please publicly address how the league intends to handle DiJonai Carrington’s “WHITE PRIVILEGE @IndianaFever” post immediately following her ejection for a Flagrant 2 foul.

If the WNBA’s position is that the post does not warrant investigation or discipline, then say that publicly.

But silence is no longer an acceptable answer.

A player invoked race, specifically targeted another WNBA organization, and did so immediately after being ejected from a highly charged game. We believe that deserves serious scrutiny and, depending on the league’s findings, meaningful discipline.

The standard should be simple:

Racism is unacceptable regardless of who says it, who it targets, or which direction it travels.

If similar conduct involving race would demand accountability under different circumstances, consistency requires the same scrutiny here.

We are not asking the WNBA to prejudge Carrington.

We are asking the WNBA and WNBPA to address it.

Investigate it. Explain the standard. Make a decision.

And if the decision is to do nothing, tell the fans that too.

The league owes everyone clarity.

A MESSAGE TO WNBA SPONSORS, INVESTORS & CORPORATE PARTNERS

I’m going to say something that needs to be said, and I’m saying it as a BLACK MAN who has supported women’s basketball and wants to see the WNBA succeed.

Sponsors and investors need to start paying attention to the narratives being pushed around this league.

Monica McNutt. Andraya Carter. Chiney Ogwumike.

There is a growing perception among fans that when the subject is Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, or the Indiana Fever, the conversation repeatedly becomes about what THEY need to do differently, what THEY need to take accountability for, how THEY need to speak up, or how THEY are somehow responsible for the actions of other people.

But when the exact same standard should be applied to Black players, that energy often seems to disappear.

That is a problem.

And I’m not saying Black players should be treated more harshly. I’m saying they should be treated exactly the same.

If Caitlin Clark is expected to answer for her fans, then every player should be expected to answer for their own supporters.

If Sophie Cunningham deserves criticism for her actions, then so does every other player.

If Caitlin is expected to demonstrate “self-awareness,” then that expectation cannot suddenly disappear when the player involved is Black.

And if a player is ejected for a Flagrant 2 and then publicly posts about “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” that deserves to be discussed with the same seriousness that every controversial Caitlin Clark moment receives.

You cannot demand accountability from one group while constantly explaining, contextualizing and defending another.

That isn’t equality.

And sponsors should care about this.

Because your money is helping build this league. Your brands are attached to the broadcasts, the players, the analysts and the conversations surrounding the WNBA.

You have every right to expect the people representing this league to promote competition, fairness and unity — not repeatedly reinforce racial division or create the perception that certain players are held to a different standard because of their race.

I’m not asking sponsors to silence anyone.

I’m asking you to WATCH.

Watch the commentary.

Watch who gets criticized.

Watch who gets defended.

Watch who is told to take accountability.

Watch who gets their behavior explained away.

And most importantly, watch whether the standard remains the same when the jersey, the team and the player’s race changes.

Because fans are watching.

And fans are the reason sponsors have an audience to market to in the first place.

The WNBA has an incredible opportunity in front of it.

But you cannot build a bigger league by constantly dividing the people who are watching it.

Hold everyone accountable.
Protect nobody from legitimate criticism.
Attack nobody because of their race.
And stop pretending fans don’t notice the difference.

I’m a Black man saying this because I believe the standard should be fair for everybody.
