The Killing of Dr Rogers Stewart, 16th November 1905, at Mbaise, Igbo land.
The victim was Dr Rogers Stewart. He was not a soldier. He was a British medical doctor drafted to help the British combat malaria in Southern Nigeria. He was stationed in Owerri area.
How it happened:
On 16 November 1905, he tried to travel by bicycle from Owerri to Calabar. There were no proper roads. He took a wrong turn onto the hostile Owerri to Bende road, heading through Udo into Ezinihitte, in what is today north Mbaise, Imo State.
At that time, the District Commissioner for the area was H M Douglas, a man hated by the people of Ahiara and Ezinihitte because he was ordering them to supply labour and palm produce and to submit to native courts. The people of Ahiara under their leaders had rejected his orders, saying it was a direct attack on their political and economic power.
When Stewart appeared on a bicycle in European dress, the people in Etiti and Ezinihitte divisions mistook him for Douglas. The bicycle was strange. Some thought it was a white man machine that could run back to Owerri to report.
He was captured alive. They did not kill him immediately. They displayed him around the market places of Etiti and Ezinihitte as a trophy, to show they had captured the white commissioner.
He was then taken to the Afor Ukwu market of Onicha Amairi in Ahiara. There they killed him. His bicycle was tied to a tree by people of Onicha Amairi, as the story is told, to prevent it returning to Owerri to report his death.
After killing, they severed his limbs and shared them amongst Mbaise clans as a mark of combined grievance and oath of unity against the white man. Some accounts recorded by Ekechi and Geary in 1927 say he was decapitated and parts consumed as fetish protection from the control of the white man.
Only his skull and some bones were eventually retrieved by British troops and sent to Calabar for burial.
What followed:
On 7 December 1905, Douglas ordered the Ahiara Expedition to punish the murder. The military action was led by Major Hugh Montague Trenchard, later known in the East as the greatest destroyer of towns.
The Ahiara indigenes had learned of the attack and dug trenches around the village. When the British attacked on 7 December, the defence was so strong they had to retreat.
The British brought stronger reinforcements with Maxim guns and launched a second brutal attack, defeating them. Many natives were massacred, villages wiped out, homes and crops destroyed. The British destroyed the Afor Ukwu market where Stewart was killed and jailed the village leaders.
This case is why the whole operation was called the Bende Onitsha Hinterland Expedition of 1905 to 1906, which was the largest British expedition in Eastern Nigeria since the Aro Expedition of 1901 to 1902.
