🕯 We remember. Sandarmokh. 1937.
From October 27, 1937, to November 4, the NKVD executed representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia in the Karelian grove of Sandarmokh. In just a few days, the Soviet (so dear to some) regime executed 1,111 prisoners of the Solovki camp. Among them were scholars, playwrights, writers, poets, teachers, engineers, priests. This includes Mykola Zerov, Les Kurbas, Mykola Kulish, Valerian Pidmohylny, Pavlo Fylypovych, Marko Vorony, Anton Krushelnytsky and his sons Ostap and Bohdan, Volodymyr Chekhivsky, Stepan Rudnytsky, Matviy Yavorsky, and many others. The flower of Ukrainian culture. People who thought, created, and built were destroyed by a bullet to the back of the head. A bullet to the back of the head—does that ring any bells?
They were prepared for death in three barracks at Medveha Hora. In the first, they verified the surname and stripped them; in the second, they bound them; and in the third, they beat them over the head with a wooden "mallet" to make them lose consciousness. Then they loaded them onto trucks and drove them to Sandarmokh, 40 souls at a time. The half-dead were dumped into large pits, and a member of the execution squad, Mykhailo Mateiev, shot each one in the head. The descendants of the murderers are now marching like a horde again, thirsting to kill.( 236 execution pits with buried victims were found only in 1997.
The photo shows the Sandarmokh grove. Today we know their names. And we must remember. Because Sandarmokh is not just about death. It's about the truth that couldn't be buried. They tried to destroy us then, and they're trying to destroy us quite effectively now, but defeat is guaranteed to all who are against Ukraine! The memory of the fallen Ukrainians will live forever in our hearts!
