Hospitals that don’t scare people. That is the idea around which we do everything at Superhealth.

This Saturday night, we tried something unusual: we hosted a musical event at the hospital.

I know how that sounds a little WTF. And plenty of people have been outraged by it. But hear me out.

The guest list was curated. Every patient and attendant was invited. Several joined us—some because they were bored, some because they wanted a distraction, and some because a hospital can feel like a very lonely place on a Saturday night.

Here is how it actually worked.

We closed the OPDs at 8 pm, as we do every day. The event began at 10 pm, with registration in the OPD lobby. Everything else took place in the basement, mezzanine and fourth-floor (our office).

All active inpatient areas were on completely off-limits and separated from the event by multiple floors in between and extensive sound insulation.

To be absolutely clear: no music or event related sound reached the patients. Not “almost zero.” Zero.

I’ve read the criticism, and I think the debate is useful and makes the point more strongly. It reveals how deeply we have accepted hospitals as places that must feel cold, frightening and morose. The mere suggestion that a hospital could also be warm, hopeful—perhaps even joyful—feels wrong to us.

Then we wonder why people avoid hospitals. Why they tolerate pain for days, postpone tests and ignore symptoms until manageable problems become serious ones. Until that shoulder pain becomes shoulder surgery.

Patients do not want to live in a morose environment. Their attendants do not either. If we can offer people a few hours of distraction, warmth or joy without compromising their care or rest, we believe that effort is worth making.
Hospitals do not need to be scary places. We are going to keep pushing that belief.

And to everyone who was disturbed or triggered by this: you have an open invitation to visit the next event. Come see how it works. It may surprise you.

As I always say, I hope you never need a hospital. But if you do, I hope you find one that is warm, inviting and kind not one that is lonely, morose and scary.
