Jacob Tierney on Shane deleting his “We didn’t even kiss” text message to Ilya at the end of Episode 2 in ‘Heated Rivalry’
“I knew this was the moment to end the episode. It was a small thought Shane had in the book, but it was just one of those things that always stuck out to me and always moved me. I wanted to make sure we included it in the show. This was the moment when I was writing that I realized how important texting would be. I knew it would be fun with the "Jane" and "Lily" stuff, but I didn't yet realize drafting a text and then deleting it would be a great way to show the characters' inner thoughts. Shane wants to say so much, but he can't because it makes him too vulnerable and it's too real. But he knows in his heart what he wants, and all he actually wants is to be kissed, and I think that's really sweet.”
