Having players with this mentality is the first sign of a dangerous team. Bro was putting up meaningless 30 pieces towards the end of last year. Couldve came in hot about that projected depth chart but it’s still team 1st. Love to see it
Imagine how MEGA HUGE the Ga v Ala game would be in a 2 team or 4 team playoff era? Now imagine how fairly immaterial it will be in the upcoming 24 team playoff era?
Thanks, college football.
Alabama dominated Mississippi State
Mississippi State beat Mizzou
Mizzou obliterated Florida
Florida eviscerated Ole Miss
Ole Miss beat LSU
LSU annihilated Texas A&M
Much to think about.
This is where NIL has destroyed college football.
The only reason Bryce Underwood is not on the bench right now is because of how much money he’s making.
Turns out nobody cares about the CUPCAKE matchups happening across the Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12.
EVERY game with notable ratings has involved an SEC team.
People still talk about this, no one remembers JMU in the playoffs just a season ago. No one remembers Boise in the playoffs 2 seasons ago. These games meant infinitely more than a playoff game in a tournament you could never win.
Multiple factors, but here are the key reasons imo
1. Games between big programs just feel like two groups of mercenaries facing off. The teams don’t feel as tied to the fanbase or community as much anymore because guys are only there for like eight months.
2. Mercenary teams means sloppy football for the first month. And not in the fun Pac-12 way.
3. The broadcast feels like a vehicle that purely exists to get you sign up for a sportsbook. They have to dial it back. It’s too much.
4. The pregame shows don’t feel like they actually love the sport, but rather just love the conference that pays them more.
5. Vibes are off, generally.
2008 College Football: a Week 5 loss meant so much that a QB publicly apologized while in tears and his postgame speech is eventually engraved on a plaque on the outside of their stadium.
24-team CFP College Football: you can literally lose 4 times and it doesn’t matter.
One of the most famous games of the 21st century in CFB. Today it would be a “meaningless bowl game”. The sport peaked during the BCS. But yeah let’s just keep expanding the playoffs
Yay! Ohio State, Georgia, etc. will be in the CFP every year for eternity and losing in the regular season won’t matter at all!
Potential death blow to one of the biggest things that makes CFB awesome: a regular season that matters.
There are only two historically acceptable send-offs for legendary pitchers.
One is having his wife and kid run out to the mound.
The other is letting him shout his coach off the mound.
We have had the distinct privilege of witnessing both.
