Midland Christian remains one of the most storied programs in TXPSFB history. However, despite consistent playoff appearances in recent seasons, the Mustangs haven’t quite reached the championship-caliber standard they’ve set in decades past. That’s where newly hired head coach Phil Dawson comes in. After a strong rebuilding run at Hyde Park, Dawson has been brought in to restore the Mustangs to title contention.
Fortunately for Dawson, he inherits a roster loaded with talent and experience. Leading the way is Utah commit Rowdy Pearce, regarded as the top offensive lineman in TXPSFB. Pearce will anchor a crucial offensive line unit tasked with protecting freshman quarterback Jaxon Franco, a promising lefty who will be thrown into the fire early.
Franco will have reliable targets to work with in Jaret Stockstill, Callaway Rodriguez, Jaxon Jones and Stacy Jones, giving the Mustangs a solid receiving corps. A key player to watch is junior Caleb Cruz, a dynamic two-way athlete with a D1 offer from UTEP. Cruz is expected to make an impact at both wide receiver and in the secondary.
Defensively, the Mustangs could field one of the best units in the state. The front line features Isaiah Matthew and Angel Villarreal, while the linebacker group of Brady Young, Cadyn Bishop, Coy Hayes and Reid Larson is among the strongest and most experienced in Texas private school football. In the secondary, Cesar Gutierrez and Cutter Smith join Cruz to round out a deep and athletic group.
Overall, Midland Christian is poised to take a step forward this season, especially considering how strong they are on the defensive side of the ball. However, questions remain about the offense's explosiveness, particularly in the skill positions. With a freshman at quarterback and a lack of proven big-play threats, the Mustangs may struggle to keep pace with more balanced teams.
For now, Fort Worth Christian and All Saints hold the edge in the district, but don’t be surprised if Midland Christian turns a few heads this fall.
