Colorized footage captures U.S. Marines raising the American flag over Betio following the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943.

After 76 hours of brutal fighting, the island was finally secured. As the Stars and Stripes rose above the battlefield, battle-worn Marines stood at attention and saluted in honor of the fallen and the hard-fought victory.

A solemn moment marking one of the bloodiest amphibious battles of the Pacific War.
