NASA has now confirmed that the unknown explosion heard Saturday afternoon over Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and other parts of the Northeastern United States, was indeed caused by the entry and burn up of a meteor, which broke up at an altitude of 40 miles over Northeastern Massachusetts. According to NASA, the energy released at breakup is estimated to have been equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT.
