NBC@35 | Through the stories they tell, journalists have the power to transform awareness into action and shape the narrative of Africa.
These were the words of the Secretary General of the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) at the NBC @ 35 Years celebration in Windhoek today.
Nomhle Kangootui reminded media professionals that they are more than just conveyors of news; they are educators, advocates and catalysts for change.
She noted that their stories have the power to inform, inspire and mobilise communities towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which include eradicating poverty, ensuring quality education, addressing climate change and promoting peace and justice.
She stressed that Africa's narrative has too often been shaped by external voices and that it's time for journalists and content creators to take charge of its story.
Such work, she says, can be done by telling authentic stories, challenging stereotypes, highlighting Africa's successes and addressing its unique challenges with honesty and integrity.
Kangootui says this is essential for fostering pride, resilience and informed participation across societies.

The lead actor of Breaking Bad just explained why Walter White actually died, and it had nothing to do with the bullet.
The show's creator says Walt forgot about the book, or maybe never noticed the inscription. A simple mistake. Cranston says Walt stopped being the guy who would have caught that. The methodical chemist who dissolved bodies in acid and built airtight alibis got replaced by someone who killed Mike on impulse and left a signed confession in the guest bathroom.
The book isn't a plot hole. The book is the thesis.
Season 1 Walt hid a second cell phone inside a vent, built a fake composite story to explain every bruise, and memorized Skyler's eBay selling schedule to time his cooks. That guy finds the inscription and burns the book the same night Gale gives it to him. Season 5 Walt keeps it on the toilet because Heisenberg doesn't believe he can be caught.
Cranston understood something about Walt that Gilligan was too close to see. Gilligan needed a plot mechanism to get from A to B. Cranston saw the character logic: the transformation from scientist to kingpin wasn't just moral. It was operational. Every careful system Walt built in seasons 1 through 3 eroded in direct proportion to his sense of invincibility.
The man who put a ricin capsule inside an electrical outlet left a book that says "To my other favorite W.W." next to the toilet paper. That's ego as a narrative force, and Cranston played five seasons knowing it was coming.
An advocacy group has launched a movement calling for what it describes as true and just reparations for the descendants of the Ovaherero and Nama genocide.

U.S. lawmakers have voted for a resolution to rein in President Donald Trump's war powers on Iran.
215 to 208 House Representatives on Wednesday voted in favour of the resolution that would direct President Trump to either end U.S. military action in Iran or seek authorisation from Congress to continue.
The majority were Democrats with support by four Republicans, and the resolution now awaits action from the Senate.
According to the U.S. 1973 War Powers Act, congressional approval is needed by the President to continue military operations after 90 days.
The U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran is now in its fourth month, marking exactly 97 days since the attacks began on February 28, 2026.

Sex without marriage? Fine.
Children without marriage? Fine.
Abortion without marriage? Fine.
But cooking without marriage is where the line gets drawn? Your priorities are completely backwards.

Part of me wonders whether the reluctance to share knowledge stems from insecurity/inferiority complex. When “expertise” becomes one of the few things that distinguishes someone, there can be a temptation to guard it rather than teach it.

According to Peter, the gathering provides a platform for reflection, shared learning and the development of a stronger, more united movement capable of advancing the rights and well-being of sex workers across the country.
Peter said NAMSWA, as the umbrella body representing Namibia’s sex workers movement, continues to play a central role in bringing members together and supporting advocacy initiatives.

I don’t understand the purpose of all these titles. Like what’s the difference between a business leader and professional? The entrepreneur selling kapana is also a professional without a suit, shiny shoes, designer glasses and an apparently valuable piece of paper. And then?
