The truth is, God loved the world so much that He gave up His divine privileges, was born into human skin, and died a criminal’s death, so that the people He loves could have eternal life. People like you.
Spent three days inside Angola Prison, from GP to death row, preaching Jesus, ministering and baptizing men. Some people flex money. I’m flexing what Jesus did with my life.
Think about how patient God is with sinful men. A man wakes in the morning because God has sustained his life through the night. His lungs fill because God gives him breath. His heart continues beating because God has not commanded it to stop. Then that same man can spend the day mocking, denying, cursing, or ignoring the One on whom every second of his existence depends.
Paul told the men of Athens that God Himself “gives to all people life and breath and all things” (Acts 17:25). We do not possess life independently. Every breath is received. Every heartbeat is permitted. Even the mouth used to blaspheme God is being sustained by God while the blasphemy is spoken.
Daniel said something similar to Belshazzar: “the God in whose hand are your life breath and all your ways, you have not glorified” (Daniel 5:23). That sentence should make us tremble. The sinner can raise his fist toward heaven only because God continues giving strength to the arm.
And yet God does not immediately strike down every rebel. Jesus said that the Father “causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45). The atheist eats food grown under God’s rain. The blasphemer feels the warmth of God’s sun. The immoral man enjoys relationships, intelligence, laughter, work, and another morning he did nothing to earn.
We often call these things ordinary because they happen every day. Scripture teaches us to see them as patience. Paul asks, “do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). God’s patience is never approval of rebellion. It is mercy giving the sinner another moment in which repentance may be commanded and the gospel proclaimed.
And this should crush pride in those of us who belong to Christ. We were not born breathing better air than other sinners. There was a time when we also received God’s gifts while withholding from Him the glory He deserved. Grace found us while we were rebels.
Every breath therefore carries a testimony. God is sustaining creatures who owe Him everything, many of whom will use His gifts against Him today. The wonder is not that judgment exists. The wonder is that a holy God is so patient with men who borrow breath from Him to deny His name.
You could hear the pilot reciting the Lord’s Prayer as the Learjet 60 plummeted towards the ground at 700 mph to receive their inevitable fate.
“Hallowed by Thy name…”
In the midst of this tragedy, there is comfort in knowing that they’re both resting in the arms of Jesus Christ now.
Tomorrow is never promised to you so make today count.
I’m praying for all 9 of the lives lost yesterday.
There will be a final millisecond of each of our lives. None of us knows when ours will arrive.
Accept Yeshua.
Love the Lord God.
Live according to His word.
Ours may not be in this horrifically tragic way, and it may not get captured on camera. But this millisecond will eventually happen to all of us.
Psalm 90:12:
So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
While the Lord saw fit to call those 9 on board to their eternal destination, He also saw fit to preserve the person in the white car. None of the 9 on board knew that it was their last hour on earth. Be ready to meet God at any time, repent of sin and believe in Jesus as Savior.
Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.
