@BryceWeiner the predatory journal/book publishing scams are 100% capitalism and nothing really to do with academia...the way people in administration and admissions get paid more than professors is capitalism infesting academia...but academia his its own set of problems too
@BryceWeiner in that, being on arXiv does not ACTUALLY give more credence to a paper; it just looks more legit to VCs than hosting one's own paper and it's closer to looking like a published article to people who don't know what they're looking at
@BryceWeiner issue being they don't want to take files directly and that using a third party platform for file validation takes out a large part of the risk surface...so arXiv DOES serve a purpose, but it's more for storage and hygiene not for clout or validation necessarily
@BryceWeiner they kinda don't...arXiv only works on VCs from what i can tell...no legit publication will have a reference from arXiv, but you will see TONS of citations from arXiv in crytpo papers
@BryceWeiner arXiv is where people put their papers when they know they probably won't get published but they can call them "pre-publication" to make their work look legit...arXiv was a great concept, but the quality of work has always been ass because it hasn't passed peer review
Look, I know people aren't too happy about Kumail Nanjiani as Booster Gold. But we're not the ones casting. The general audience won't really care. All that matters is that Kumail delivers a good performance, and if he does, i guarantee that haters will switch.
