#Euskadi - Today marks the anniversary of the death of Athletic Club Bilbao’s antifascist supporter Iñigo Cabacas. Cabacas was shot in the head and seriously injured during a police attack on fans on April 5, 2012, and died on April 9.
After Athletic Bilbao’s UEFA Europa League match against Schalke 04 on April 5, 2012, police opened fire on supporters with rubber bullets. Cabacas was struck in the head, fell into a coma with severe brain damage, and died four days later.
Witnesses stated that there was no serious clash and that police directly fired into the crowd.
Years after the incident, six police officers were put on trial. Only one officer, the operation commander, received a 2-year prison sentence. The others were acquitted. The officer who was sentenced did not serve time in prison.
Cabacas became a symbolic figure, especially for Athletic Bilbao supporters and antifascist fan communities in the Basque Country. He is remembered every year, and banners and flags bearing his name and image are always present in the stands of Athletic Bilbao.
