I am disturbed to see Prof. Suryanarayana Doola being vilified over the recent controversy at IIT Bombay. I know Surya personally. He is one of the finest faculty members I have known in the IIT system, and a gentleman of the highest integrity. Whatever concerns have been raised should be examined fairly. A public campaign against an individual serves no one.

With over 25 years of experience at IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, here is my take on the entire controversy and also a solution, which I believe we must look into.

The problems we are seeing are all primarily because of the one size fits all approach in IITs.

With students coming through an intensive coaching culture, and classrooms bringing together students whose JEE Advanced ranks range from single digits to five digits (in the same class -for example CSE in IIT Delhi), we now have highly heterogeneous classrooms across the IIT system. Language also further adds to the challenge.

The question to ask therefore is, with such heterogeneity, can we expect every student to learn at the same pace?

There is nothing wrong with opening the doors of our best institutions to students from different backgrounds. The question is whether we have addressed this heterogeneity in our teaching-learning methods.

A faculty member cannot pitch every class at several levels at once. Move too slowly, and some students lose interest. Move too quickly, and others are left behind. In my classes, I have also seen students with excellent JEE Adv ranks struggle. Coaching had prepared them to solve familiar types of questions quickly. Many are lost when they see a question which they haven't solved before.

This is not a difficulty confined to any admission category. The move from coaching to independent learning can be hard for anyone.

Here is a solution.

I feel we should consider moving our https://t.co/KVfDlMnXUZ programmes to five years in IITs. Those who meet the credit requirements could complete it in four years, or perhaps three and a half. Others could spread out their courses over five years and receive more academic help, including recorded lectures, online material and support with language where needed. The pace would be decided by performance within the IIT, not by a student’s admission category or entrance rank.

Calling it a five year programme for everyone has a psychological advantage. Students who need more time would simply be following the programme as designed, while those who are ready could complete it sooner. No one would be singled out for taking a fifth year.

We must uphold academic standards. We must also recognise that students do not all arrive at the same point, or learn at the same pace. Giving them the time and support to meet those standards is a responsibility of the system.

I stand with Suryanarayan Doolla. I will not be a mute spectator to the brazen weaponisation of the 'SC/ST Act' to settle scores with a Professor who caught a student cheating in an exam.

Until 18th September (the day of Sahil Wakode's death), there was not a single complaint from any student, either with the SC/ ST Cell of IIT Bombay or the administration, of any act of caste-based discrimination by this Professor.

When the student unfortunately took his own life after being caught red-handed in the act of cheating, his parents came up with this theory of 'caste atrocity'.

According to Sahil's father, the Professor subjected the student to "severe mental harassment and casteist slurs over the past three months".

Where and how did Sahil communicate this information to his father?

Is this revelation in the form of written text/ whatsapp message or an unrecorded phone call (which we can't verify because Sahil is not in this mortal world)?

And the biggest question of all: Why did Sahil's parents not lodge a complaint with IIT-Bombay or the police and instead chose to let their son suffer for 3 months at the hands of this alleged 'casteist' Professor?

Clearly, they are aware of the provisions of SC/ ST Act. Why did they not take any action? Was it because nothing like this has ever happened?

But for 1 minute, I would have believed their version of events. But this part of the NDTV report got me thinking hard -

"The complaint explicitly names Professor Suryanarayan Dulla, who was also an invigilator during the exam in which Sahil was caught cheating, alleging that he hurled caste-based abuses at the behest of Director Shireesh B Kedare."

Wow.

A professor at IIT-Bombay was conspiring with the institute's Director to bully 1 particular student from the SC community (out of 100s who study there), knowing well that one complaint from him would jeopardise their careers.

When Sahil's father decided to lie with impunity, he should have worked alongside 'caste baiters' on social media to make his conspiracy theory believable, at least.

Because no one with an iota of rationality is buying this narrative, except, of course, politicians and influencers whose existence is based on manufactured and exaggerated victimhood.

In normal cases, a police complaint would have been filed for 'abetment of suicide.'

But Sahil's parents know that a complaint under the SC/ST Act allows for 'preventive detention' without investigation.

This is the fastest way Professor Suryanarayan Dulla could be sent behind bars.

If you are one of those who are willing to stay silent because you believe that it can't happen to you, then be ready for a surprise in jail someday.

Speak up against the brazen misuse of legislation that was intended to give justice to marginalised communities.

did my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH at IIT Bombay and my PhD at IIT Delhi. I've been a professor for 14 years now. In 22 years of watching the IIT/IIIT system closely, I have never once witnessed a teacher discriminate against a student on the basis of caste.

During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

Dr Doolla is an acclaimed professor of Energy Sciences at IIT Bombay. An MTech and a PhD from IIT, he has received excellence in teaching award twice. He recently caught a student cheating. The student committed suicide.

Dr Doolla has now been charged under the SC/ST Act.

Remember the case of Manav Singh.

Bhavleen Kaur falsely accused him of sexual harassment on her Instagram stories.

After that, she posted another story and said that it wasn't her fault that he couldn't handle the pressure. She even made fun of him and was very happy about his death.

Manav took his own life.

She didn't face any punishment. Didn't go to jail, didn't even come in the news.

And today, just look at her life.

Travelling, making reels, having fun and living her best life.

An innocent 17 year old boy lost his life because of her.

Nobody cares when it comes to men.

So many men lose their lives because of false accusations, but nothing changes.
