"If you cannot pay the artists whose work your institution is built on, it’s time to throw in the towel because you are failing your mission at its core and robbing artists of their livelihoods." https://t.co/Gt4Nfdjg2h
Peter Marks, one of the most vibrant and engaged voices in theater criticism, is taking the buyout from the Washington Post, and will be leaving the paper at the end of this year. Rejoice for him, if you will, but it's a cause for deep mourning for theater lovers.
It's chilling to think of the impact not having a lead theater critic in the paper of record for the nation's capital will have on our local and national theater field. Of all the stories being told about the theater's re-opening recovery, the crisis in arts journalism is key.
It's been a pretty amazing day since the publication of the op-Ed. I'm happy to see it's generating so much discussion! A few things I want to add, now that I see what folks are stumbling on... (op-Ed linked again here for reference) https://t.co/vj266yF8wo
I'm very glad that @parabasis wrote this. And of course I would love to see a new FTP. But I also know that history isn't on our side here. And the FTP wound up defunded so quickly because of racism and politics and so many things that will feel familiar. https://t.co/KgdLK34jxq
This story on collapse of American theatre is heartbreaking. But proposing a big bailout that is never going to happen is huge distraction. Anyone who makes anything creative is in crisis right now. We need to come up w/ more creative fixes. https://t.co/xPKb22SHzp

Speak out against those who want to hide stories about who we are and who we love; what we can know and what we can think; the narratives we can tell, the books and scripts we can read, and the parts we can play. Theatre can and must portray the great variety of life, everywhere.
As you watch the #TonyAwards, keep in mind that there are people and politicians who want to prevent both students and adults from performing some of the very plays nominated and honored tonight and elsewhere. We must speak out loudly for art & expression and against censorship.
