Former Labor politicians urge Albanese to call federal royal commission into antisemitism and Bondi attack.

Former Labor politicians and prominent party figures are urging Anthony Albanese to call a national royal commission into the Bondi terror attack amid concerns a state-level inquiry will not have enough power.

In an open letter released on Monday, former federal ministers, senators, party and union officials, and senior members of the Labor Israel Action Committee (LIAC) have called on the federal government to initiate a royal commission into the "causes of the Bondi Beach massacre, the broader ecosystem of terror and hate and the capacity of the agencies to monitor terrorist threats".

Fifteen people were killed and dozens injured last month when two gunmen opened fire targeting a Hanukkah event in Bondi in an ISIS-inspired attack.

The group argued the current planned NSW royal commission would not be able to compel institutions and individuals "beyond its jurisdiction" to give evidence, or "provide Commonwealth officers with the necessary legal protection to speak frankly".

"Only a Commonwealth royal commission can unpack the dynamics of Jew hatred including aspects such as the social media threat, how hate and incitement is weaponised in Australia and how we can come together across the nation to defeat it," the letter said.

Signatories included Mike Kelly, a former federal minister for defence material and current president of LIAC, as well as past MPs Mary Easson, Jennie George, Kim Wilkie, Mike Symon, Michael Danby, Peter Baldwin and Bernie Ripoll, and former senators Michael Forshaw, Mark Bishop and Nova Peris.

State Labor figures also backed the letter, including former NSW deputy opposition leader Walt Secord, former NSW treasurers Eric Roozendaal and Michael Costa, and former vice president of the Victorian Labor Party Henry Pinskier.

Growing list backing the push

The group of former Labor politicians, who in their open letter argued the "stake is the health of our democracy and our national security" join a growing list of sporting, business and legal experts in Australia backing the push for a broad royal commission.

The Prime Minister has so far resisted those calls, instead tasking former spy boss Dennis Richardson with investigating Australia's security agencies and the response to the attack.

Mr Richardson is due to report back to government in April.

Mr Albanese has pledged cooperation with the NSW royal commission, but argued a national version would take too long, double up with existing work and sow division in the community.

Speaking earlier on Monday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged the push for a federal royal commission came "overwhelmingly from a good place".

"A lot of the voices that I've heard are voices that I respect a great deal," he said.

"The government's position is that we are focused on the urgent and the immediate."

Mr Chalmers said this included strengthening hate laws, tougher gun controls and implementing the recommendations in a review by the government's antisemitism special envoy Jillian Segal.

"We're focused on ensuring that we make a meaningful and helpful contribution to the NSW Royal Commission, and so that's been the government's focus on what is urgent and what is immediate," he said.

"We understand, obviously, that there are a number of Australians who would like to see a Commonwealth royal commission … we respect those people.

"We understand that those calls are coming from a good place."

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley accused Mr Albanese of making up unfounded "excuses" for not holding a royal commission.

"He said that unnamed 'actual experts' had advised him against holding a Commonwealth royal commission, but he can't name any of them," she said.

"None of these excuses have stacked up and none have been backed with evidence."

Ms Ley said Australians "deserve" honesty and answers from their leaders.

Yet they’ve structured their system so their citizens pay little to no personal income tax.

Now look at what Australia is sitting on.

• Bauxite (aluminium ore)
• Uranium
• Lithium

We don’t just have one resource. We’ve got the whole ~shebang~.

And before someone jumps in with, “Yeah, but Australia can’t do that because we have to pay such high wages,” here’s the thing.

We only need high wages because it costs a fortune to live here.

You don’t fix cost-of-living pressure by endlessly increasing wages.
You fix it by lowering the #costofliving.

So how and why can a country with one main resource fund a tax-free lifestyle for its people, while a country with one of the most diverse and valuable resource bases on earth still has families struggling to get ahead?

This isn’t a one-party problem. We’ve been getting jibbed for decades.

Back in the 1980s and 90s, when the big #LNG and mining projects were being planned, governments were desperate for foreign investment. The pitch was basically:

“Come here, build the infrastructure, we won’t charge you much upfront, you can write off your costs, and we’ll tax you later once you’re profitable.”

The problem is the rules were written so generously that many projects have stayed in “cost-recovery mode” for most of their operating life.🥴

When big companies come here to dig up our gas and #minerals, they’re allowed to claim back almost everything they spend first. Exploration, equipment, ports, loans, #interest, admin costs, the lot. Until they’ve “recovered” all that, they don’t have to pay much at all in resource tax.

So they can export #Billions of dollars worth of our resources year after year while officially saying they still haven’t made enough profit to owe Australia much.

At the same time, the basic #royalties and taxes we charge are far lower than what countries like Saudi Arabia demand.

Saudi Arabia takes around half or more of the value of its oil straight off the top because the state owns the resource.

Australia mostly charges small royalties, then lets companies deduct nearly all their costs before paying serious #tax. That means they can export billions for years, even decades, while Australia gets crumbs.

It’s revolting, and something needs to change.

Australia runs one of the most generous resource tax systems in the world for big corporations, and while they walk away with massive profits, everyday Australians are left with luxuries like ever increasing #homelessness.
