After 20+ years of research, Kenya is close to releasing 3R potatoes 🥔, varieties resistant to Late Blight, the disease behind the Irish Potato Famine.
Developed by @Cipotato & partners, they’ll help protect farmers and secure food supplies.

We took the dream of August- and of many months before August- to Lusaka, Zambia, end of last month. This dream, of #ABBC2025, in which we strived to ramp up the momentum towards the efforts to #TalkScienceFacts, gave us a lot of sleepless nights- we were very excited for the symposium.
There, we sat long hours discussing, we welcomed on board brand new ideas, we ate quite delicious fish, and we noted down recommendations that will help us wage a winning battle against misinformation and disinformation in science.
We made sure to cast our nets far and wide. We figured out that this battle needed concerted efforts, and we intended NOT to leave anyone behind.
And now some of the lovely stories from Lusaka are here with us, in the 86th Issue of The DrumBeat, our e-newsletter. Amazing penmanship, and an even better video.
We present this with pride, the result of the painstaking efforts of a team that took to Lusaka with vigour and determination, and who left that lovely city having forged one of the clearest pathways that man can draw. Misinformation and disinformation are in our crosshairs!
Enjoy your DrumBeat 86!!
@DiscoverJKUAT's @omar_fatma99 makes a presentation titled Agriuard: Africa's AI shield against agricultural misinformation during #ABBC2025. @omar_fatma99's pitch came in a session that sought to identify the role of AI in addressing misinformation.

The team @Cipotato and @kalromkulima teams are approaching the end zone of the long and pain-staking process to bring resilient potatoes to Kenya!! So great to see their hard and careful work approaching market to protect harvests and improve the potato, a key food for all
@Cipotato welcomed Dr. Dianah Horvath of @2blades to @kalromkulima biotech potato 🥔 project sites.
The visit highlighted progress in breeding late blight–resistant potatoes—critical to reducing farmer losses & strengthening climate-resilient food systems in Africa 🌍.

The ABBC 2025 is finally here with us!!!!
Delegates are gathered here in Lusaka, Zambia to, once and for all, devise ways to slay these menacing dragons of misinformation and disinformation in science.
Evidently, it is a great day for us all as we #TalkScienceFacts at the #ABBC2025!!!

Senator @amyklobuchar visited the 2Blades lab in St. Paul last week to discuss the serious threat toxigenic fungi pose to U.S. agriculture, farmer livelihoods, and food safety.
We 👀 a few Blades in the clip, as well as some of our close collaborators at the @USDA_ARS Cereal Disease Lab and @CFANS.
I was at the University of Minnesota to highlight new funding that would accelerate research and expand opportunities for industrial hemp farmers. Supporting this growing industry is key to creating jobs, driving innovation, and building a sustainable future for agriculture.
@MakeItBetterNFP Thank you @MakeItBetter for spotlighting how our innovations help farmers protect their harvests (and livelihoods) from devastating crop diseases and pests. We are grateful to be featured alongside other high-impact organizations across Chicagoland!!
We are thrilled that @2blades’ work was selected to appear in the “You Said It” section of Better magazine by @MakeItBetterNFP. The piece spotlights how our innovations help make farmers’ lives better by protecting their harvests (and their livelihoods) from devastating crop diseases and pests.
Make It Better identifies and empowers the most transformative nonprofits by mobilizing its philanthropic community with opportunities to make lives better. It is an honor to be featured alongside other high-impact organizations across the greater #Chicago region.
Over 700M people faced hunger in 2023—but 2.8B suffer from “hidden hunger,” a lack of proper nutrition. @2blades uses AI, gene editing & more to fight crop disease and build a resilient food system. Read more⬇️ https://t.co/8K7ztIjo1r

Join 2Blades’ Group Leader @kamiljwitek and @Leena_Tripathi at the 2025 @ISMPMI Congress in Cologne this summer! #2025ISMPMI
They will be co-hosting the session "Management of Diseases and Emerging Diseases," which will explore innovative, environmentally friendly strategies for disease management, including genetic resistance and integrated pest management.
Abstract submissions are now open for those interested in presenting during the session. Submit your abstract by March 11 using the link below.

Mycotoxins, [ mahy-koh-tok-sin ]
noun,Pathology:
chemicals produced by certain fungi that grow within the corn plant, cause illness and death in humans and animals.
Corn is one of the most consumed crops globally, but crop diseases are a major threat to yield.
In the United States, mitigation efforts and crop losses due to mycotoxins cost growers $1.4 billion annually. FFAR & partners are awarding a grant to @2blades to use new genetic tools to develop corn with strong, long-lasting resistance to these fungi.
