Islamabad is asking Washington for a $10 billion exchange stabilization facility, a rare U.S. Treasury backstop that would bolster Pakistan's reserves and ease pressure on the rupee.

The request came directly to Treasury Sec. Bessent, with a 5-year maturity window, and follows Pakistan's elevated diplomatic profile after brokering U.S.-Iran negotiations.

For context, only two such facilities have been granted to foreign governments since 2002, Argentina last year, and Uruguay before that.

Pakistan narrowly avoided default in 2023 and its reserves still depend on Chinese and Saudi rollovers, so this would be a genuine economic lifeline.
