Virunga National Park is pleased to share a historic milestone: the Bageni family twins, Uzima and Urithi, have turned six months old — the first mountain gorilla twins in Virunga National Park to reach this age.

Thanks to months of close monitoring by our field teams, both infants are developing well and taking their first steps toward independence. Their mother, Mafuko, remains close by and attentive.

From 950 to 1,500 Lions: Urgent Need for Lion Relocation to Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh
Tiger conservation in India is being carried out on a very large scale, but why can’t lion conservation be done in the same way? This question has not arisen today but has been raised for a long time. However, in recent years, its need has become important in two ways.
First, all Asiatic lions have multiplied from a very small population and have now reached around 950. Because of this, their genetic and genome sequence is relatively less refined, which plays an important role in strengthening the immune system of any living being. Therefore, it is critically necessary to establish another colony of these lions in a nearby state from Gujarat, whether it is Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh. Otherwise, this group-living apex predator is in danger, and it is the only wild population of this species left in the world.
Second, in recent years, in Gujarat’s districts like Somnath, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Rajkot (which we can also call Greater Gir), after about 400 lions in the core areas, the remaining population is surviving in the rural areas, river valleys, or small forests of these districts. The situation was not as tense five years ago as it is today. In the past few months, there have been attacks by lions in which about 4 people have been injured and 3 deaths have occurred, including a 7-year-old girl. The Gujarat Forest Department catches these lions and sends them to rehabilitation centers. This number is now gradually increasing and has reached around 50. This problem is not going to decrease in the coming times.
Today, with 950 lions, so much tension has already been created in rural areas. It is frightening to even think about what the situation will be like in the next 5 years when these lions reach 1,200. These lions should be relocated in a phased manner in batches of 50-50 to the border areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where the joint cheetah project is already running. This would be a very good effort. A healthy population of lions from India’s far west would also be established in the forests of western Central India. The landscape there is so vast that its lion-carrying capacity can easily reach 500, which is not possible with tigers.
If a Mission 2035 is launched and an attempt is made under this mission to increase the population of these lions to 1,500, then these forests can play an important role in it. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, and sometimes tigers will also be visible. The sad thing is that due to the indifference of the Gujarati government, 200 lions and their cubs have died, which in no way can be called conservation, nor can we call it the law of nature, because these are our own mistakes which we are trying to hide today.

A 13-year- old child loses their life because of unimaginable cruelty. An 80-year-old woman also dies after being subjected to horrific cruelty.

Different ages, different lives- but the same heartbreaking absence of humanity.

I feel ashamed of the kind of society we are becoming, where such acts can happen and where monsters seem to exist among us. A society is not measured by its wealth, technology, or development- it is measured by how it protects its children, its elderly, and its most vulnerable.

If we cannot safeguard the innocent, then we must ask ourselves what kind of world we are leaving for future generations.

May we never become so indifferent that cruelty begins to feel normal.
