In fact, Wagner thought this Urelement Leitmotif was so important he dedicated a whole 136 bars to it, all in the key of E-flat major! He combines the Natur Leitmotif with the second Leitmotif of the opera known as “Wellen” or Waves. He is painting an aural picture of the Rhine.

A Leitmotif is a short, constantly recurring musical phrase that is associated with a particular person, place, or idea. The first Leitmotif and mother of them all in the ring, the “Urelement” is called “Natur” or Nature and gives birth to the sound world of Das Rheingold.
