๐โก๏ธ๐ MOON TO DEAD COIN | Project Review 36: $BTG
Do you know?
$BTG (Bitcoin Gold) rode the 2017 "free Bitcoin fork" gold rush to a TOP-8 rank and an ~$8 BILLION market cap in under 2 monthsโฆ then hackers literally REWROTE its blockchain and double-spent millions off exchanges. TWICE. Today: down ~99.9%. ๐ณ
The Launch (No ICO, A Fork Airdrop ๐):
โถ๏ธ NO ICO, NO public sale: BTG hard-forked from Bitcoin (Nov 2017), airdropping 16.5M BTG 1:1 to $BTC holders
โถ๏ธ Created by Jack Liao: CEO of an ASIC-mining company, pitching an "ASIC-resistant, GPU-mineable Bitcoin" (an irony critics never let go)
โถ๏ธ Controversy from Day 1: A founders' "premine" of ~100,000 BTG set aside for the team
โถ๏ธ Rode "free money from a fork" hype straight into a top-8 rank
Here's the Wild Part ๐
$BTG ATH: ~$539.72 (Dec 2017), ~$8B market cap, 8th-largest crypto, less than 2 months after launch. Pure fork-hype Euphoria.
Then it Got Hunted:
1๏ธโฃ 51% Attack #1 (May 2018): an attacker seized >50% of BTG's hashpower and double-spent 388,000 BTG ($18M), defrauding exchanges (Bittrex, Binance, Bitfinex, Bithumb & more)
โ Bittrex lost ~12,372 BTG, asked BTG to compensate, BTG refused โ Bittrex DELISTED it (Sept 2018)
โ BTG changed its mining algorithm to try to become attack-proof
2๏ธโฃ 51% Attack #2 (Jan 2020): it happened AGAIN, deep reorgs, more double-spends hitting Binance. The "fix" didn't fix the real problem: low hashrate.
The core flaw: a small PoW coin has LOW hashpower โ renting enough mining power to 51%-attack it is CHEAP. It's a sitting duck, by design.
The Bleed:
โ $474 (Dec 2017) โ $109 (end 2017) โ $10.35 (end 2018) โ $0.80 (TODAY)
โ Lost >98% in just TWO years, and kept bleeding
โ Under 100 active nodes; development slowed to a crawl
Today:
โก๏ธ A low-cap shadow trading a tiny fraction of ATH (verify live, see note), down ~99.9%
โก๏ธ Rank collapsed into the four figures, from TOP-8 to forgotten
โก๏ธ "Bitcoin" in the name, none of Bitcoin's security
Lesson for my CryptoPatel Family:
๐ A FORK of Bitcoin is NOT Bitcoin. "Bitcoin Gold," "Bitcoin _," "the better Bitcoin", the name is MARKETING borrowing Bitcoin's prestige. Almost every 2017 fork coin bled to dust.
๐ SECURITY = Hashpower. A small PoW coin can be 51%-attacked CHEAPLY. If a chain can be rewritten by renting mining power, it's not a safe store of value. Check the hashrate, not just the price.
๐ DELISTINGS are a death sentence. When exchanges lose money to a coin and drop it, liquidity dies. Get out early.
๐ "Free airdrop from a fork" feels like free money but lasting value comes from real security & usage, not a snapshot. Book the fork pump; don't marry the fork coin.
The 2017 fork mania minted a dozen "better Bitcoins." Almost all are dust now. A borrowed name and a free airdrop are not a moat and a chain that got hacked by rented hashpower TWICE isn't an investment, it's a liability.
Not Financial Advice. ALWAYS DYOR.
