Living the Dream in PJFL YA Winter Reading Program (• u •)! Thanks #gslis777 and @MichaelBuono for giving me the confidence to be vocal at work and making it possible! #WRP
Providing lifelong learning and a healthy development for teenagers requires us to not only be adaptive but self-improving to help them recognize the potentials they within themselves to be upstanding adults.
Five Final Twitter Takeaways #gslis777m1
(1) Being a YA Advocate means empowering teens! Although it seems like common sense, some librarians have not seen the true potential behind the teenagers and their capability to change the future of society. #gslis777
(5) Being a YA librarian is more than just sitting behind a desk, but engaging with the community and providing a positive impact in the teens we serve.
Simple, short, & sweet. This resonates with me positively because it is a reminder that it is important to be diverse just as it is important to be narrow in creating programs. It's about reaching everyone in the community with equal level of importance. Options = Opportunity!
2. Creating programs that can include a variety of people is just as important as creating programs for specific kinds of people. #gslis777m3 section 3.3. #gslis777
A solemn reminder during the course that things are not always as it seems. Although it hard to imagine my teens, who always remain positive/bright, struggling, I will try to be mentally prepared for the serious issue or dilemma they want to share with me.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means to me~
But seriously, that's what it comes down to and not just with others or objects-but yourself! Elle highlights a great point in this tweet.
Tweets like this will always resonate with me for a long time. Why? Because it's people like Juliet who are the real MVP to take the time to know their teen patrons and will make the effort to develop a healthy, but professional relationship with them.
Takeaways from #gslis777m1 section 1.3 @MichaelBuono The acceptance of teens in the library should be one of inclusion. Not separatism and rejection. Teens already have so much to deal with & adults should not turn away from the teens that will be the next working generation!
Hope for the good, never expect the worse.
Don't assume or go into your workplace with prejudice against teenagers.
There are probably teen out there who will make you feel like pulling your hair out, but there are many more who will appreciate the things you do for them. <3
Yup, and that's why it's important to have a positive attitude and demeanor. If you expect the worst. You'll get the worst. If you expect better, often times I think you'll get teens who try. #gslis777
R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Treat others the way you want to be treated. This cannot be said enough. Building relationships and trust with your patrons is significant. In due time, they will remind you why your job is worthwhile. #gslis777
Relationship building with individual teens is key. Besides building confidence in that one person, it is a window into what the wider teen community wants and needs. Demonstrating respect and using empathetic listening takes time, but the payoff is worth it.

Social media seems intimidating to librarians, but it's very interactive and worthwhile when maintaining the account. Social media is the way of the future~ It's important to have them consistently updated, you never knew who's looking at them! #gslis777
Communication involves participation, and that includes approaching teens instead of the other way around. Sometimes walking around the teen space is less intimating than behind the desk. #gslis777
You cannot expect to sit behind the desk and answer all teen questions. Sometimes you have to walk over to their space and assist. And you should love doing it too!
True back then, still true now #gslis777
Being an teen advocate means acting in the best interest for the teens we work hard to serve. But that starts with self-care! Remind yourself that your needs are important too! It'll boost your confidence & motivation to continue working!
Semester takeaway #4: Teen librarians tend to be passionate advocates. This can sometimes go hand in hand with being a bit hard on oneself and spreading oneself a bit thin. Self-care is an important and necessary part of being a true advocate #gslis777
