In Pakistan's Balochistan, a father arranged for his 3-year-old daughter to be married to a 60-year-old man in exchange for 2.5 million Pakistani rupees (about $9,000) — just weeks after his older daughter was killed by the husband from a similar arrangement.

The Arrangement-
The girl's father, Abdul Baqi, has been arrested in the border city of Chaman, while the 60-year-old man he arranged the marriage with, Salah Uddin, remains at large.

The case has drawn attention to walwar, a traditional Pashto bride-price custom in which a groom or his family pays money to the bride's family.

The marriage existed only on paper for now, since the full walwar payment had not been handed over. Once fully paid, the arrangement would have made the child legally considered Salah Uddin's wife — a process that could take years to complete.

In the meantime, the girl's family would have been barred from arranging any other match for her, even into adulthood, with any attempt to do so risking violent retaliation between the two families. Notably, Salah Uddin reportedly later asked that the family's 8-year-old daughter be sent instead of the 3-year-old.

The girl and her mother have been placed under police protection, according to local police.

A Sister's Murder, Now Under Fresh Scrutiny-
The case has taken on added weight because of what happened to Baqi's older daughter, Shukria Bibi. Baqi had previously arranged Shukria's marriage to Salah Uddin's son, Kamran, for 1.5 million rupees. A few days after that marriage, Shukria was killed — her husband Kamran reportedly said he struck her with an iron rod in anger after she looked outside through a doorway.

Baqi has told a local vlogger that his daughter faced violence from her in-laws, who then pressed him to send another young daughter into the family, and that he agreed because of poverty and a wish to buy a home. Police are now investigating whether Shukria's murder is connected to the more recent marriage dispute involving her younger sister.

Walwar-linked child marriages remain difficult to fully stamp out in parts of Pakistan despite legal reforms, particularly where poverty pushes families toward arrangements that trade a daughter's future for immediate payment — a dynamic starkly illustrated by this case, in which one daughter was already killed by her in-laws before another was nearly sent into the same family.
