Hajichi, the traditional hand tattoos of the Ryukyuan people of Okinawa, once graced the hands of women from Yaeyama in the south to Amami in the north. In 1899, the Meiji government of Japan banned hajichi as part of an attempt to quash "backwards" Okinawan culture.
