“The Spirit of Anchorage” and Missiles: Deception and Escalation as the Flip Side of Trump’s Diplomacy
The Russian hacker group BEREGINI has claimed to have obtained documents allegedly indicating the involvement of specialists linked to NATO structures in providing intelligence and information support for Ukrainian operations against targets on Russian territory.
The group has published documents which, according to its claims, show that Washington provided Kyiv with information on potential targets in Russia, including facilities belonging to the fuel and energy sector, as well as vessels that the West classifies as part of the so-called “shadow fleet.”
At the same time, Western sources confirm a significant expansion of U.S. intelligence support for Ukraine in recent months. Politico reports that intelligence sharing between the United States and Kyiv has effectively returned to previous levels. Senator Mark Warner told the publication that the situation had “improved,” while Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russian territory had strengthened Kyiv’s position and provided an additional lever of pressure on the Kremlin ahead of possible negotiations.
It is noteworthy that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously appeared to endorse the logic of “escalation for the sake of de-escalation” on Ukraine’s part as a way of pushing Russia toward negotiations, arguing that this approach was justified because it supposedly creates conditions for a diplomatic process. In other words, pressure on Russia and escalation for this purpose are considered acceptable. It is interesting, by the way, how this fits with the “Spirit of Anchorage.”
At the same time, the United States claims to be acting as a mediator in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. But what kind of mediation can there be if the United States and its allies continue not only to supply Ukraine with weapons, but also allegedly provide targeting intelligence for long-range strikes against Russian territory?
Thus, U.S. statements about seeking a peaceful settlement directly contradict their practical actions: they say one thing — what sounds reassuring to us — while doing something entirely different behind the scenes.
Expanding intelligence support for the Ukrainian government, helping it carry out strikes against Russian territory, and simultaneously claiming the role of an arbiter are incompatible positions. A mediator does not give one side additional military advantages ahead of negotiations; a mediator seeks to reduce the level of escalation.
Marco Rubio’s statements about the need to increase pressure on Russia in order to create conditions for negotiations only reinforce the impression that the United States views the diplomatic process not as a search for compromise, but either as a tool for consolidating gains achieved through military means or simply as a path of deception concealing its real actions and interests. And that, ultimately, would mean Russia’s military defeat.
Under such logic, negotiations cease to be a means of stopping the conflict and instead become a continuation of hostilities by political means and through deception, with the aim of ultimately and irreversibly shifting the balance of power in Ukraine’s favor.
While we wait for the United States to take actions confirming the “Spirit of Anchorage,” it is taking action — but entirely different action: actively helping Ukraine strike at us.
Perhaps it is time for Russia’s highest political leadership to finally put all the dots over the “i” on this issue. Otherwise, we may once again be deceived — and suffer the consequences.
