MODERN GREATS IN UMBRO
As Umbro turn 100 this Thur 23 May, here is a 🧵 of some of the greatest players of the modern era (1990-) wearing Umbro kit at club level.
This period, where Umbro grew merchandising to 40% of Utd’s turnover and the team picked up 7 PL, 3 FAC, and 1 CL trophy, is covered in chapter ‘There’s nothing on Earth like being a Red’ in my book ‘Double Diamond’ out 12 Aug: https://t.co/b4IkMhYYMW
27 May 2023 - Luton’s playoff promotion meant that Umbro would have more Premier League sides (five) than any other for the first time since 2010/11, having supplied no sides in 2013/14 following the Nike sale.
6 February 2013 - After two spells supplying England for 50 of the previous 59 years, Frank Lampard scores the final goal in an Umbro England shirt in a friendly against Brazil, with the contract transferring to former owners Nike afterUmbro’s sale to Iconix.
6 Oct 2001 - David Beckham scores a late free-kick against Greece to secure England’s World Cup place and a windfall for Umbro.
This was crucial, as increasing kit contract costs meant their English club pool had narrowed to just Chelsea, Forest, Carlisle and Morecambe by 2002
26 May 1999 - Manchester United claim their second European title in Umbro kit (after 1968), the peak of a 10-year relationship 1992-02 which revolutionised football merchandising with income increasing to 40% of Utd’s turnover by 1994/95
4 July 1990 - England reach the World Cup semi final, with the tournament’s success marking a turning point in the rehabilitation of football’s reputation after the violence and decay witnessed in the 1980s.
29 May 1985 - Umbro’s nadir as the European Cup final (overshadowed by the stadium tragedy) saw them lose their last major club side to former partners adidas.
Umbro had been the sole adidas UK supplier since 1961, with adidas revenue raising more than their own products.
10 May 1978 - Liverpool win the second of four European Cups in seven years in Umbro.
Having invented unbranded replica shirts in 1955, the success of an embroidered replica final shirt woke Umbro up to branded kit sales’ potential, after new boys Admiral had stolen a march.
11 May 1966 - Real Madrid win the European Cup in Umbro kit. Following Brazil’s win in Umbro in 1958, this meant that the company had claimed the world’s premier national and club trophies.
10 November 1954 - England wear Umbro for the first time against Wales, meaning they had supplied the Home Nations as well as winners of all major English and Scottish club trophies
