Primary reports (Ibn Umar in Tirmidhi 3477, Ibn Abbas in Abu Dawud 1488) are da’eef individually at best hasan li-ghayrihi per al-Albani—not sahih. Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله) ruled it an innovation: No authentic hadith proves it it’s not from the Sunnah. (Majmoo’ Fatawa 11/273)

ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Indeed, a man may desire a position of authority or a business venture. Allah mentions him in the seven heavens and says to the angel: ‘Turn him away from it, for if I make it easy for him, it will cause him to enter the Fire.’
He then becomes suspicious of his neighbors, saying, ‘Who deceived me? Who did this to me?’, while none turned it away from him except Allah.” (Source: az-Zuhd by Abū Dāwūd 181)
قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ]ابن مسعود]: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُرِيدُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ الْإِمَارَةِ، أَوِ التِّجَارَةِ، فَيَذْكُرُهُ اللَّهَ فِي سَبْعِ سَمَاوَاتٍ، فَيَقُولُ لِلْمَلَكِ: اصْرِفْهُ عَنْهُ، فَإِنِّي إِنْ أُيَسِّرْهُ لَهُ أُدْخِلْهُ بِهِ النَّارَ قَالَ: فَيَتَظَنَّى بِجِيرَانِهِ، أَيُّهُمْ دَهَانِي؟ أَيُّهُمْ فَعَلَ بِي؟ وَمَا صَرَفَهُ عَنْهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ / الزهد لأبي داود (١٨١)
