This was never about men refusing to take care of their wives, it’s about how responsibilities are traditionally shared. I’ve lived among different tribes, and I’ve seen similar arrangements elsewhere too.

Most husbands aren’t billionaires or millionaires who can abandon work for days without consequences. If a man skips work to sit in the hospital all day, who’s going to pay the hospital bills, buy the medication, and keep the household running?

Yesterday, I sent my younger brother to our farm to hire two people for a small job. When they were almost done, I decided to go there myself to inspect the work and pay them.

The moment I saw them, Wallahi, my heart became heavy.

Both men were over 50 years old, old enough to be grandfathers, yet they were still under the scorching sun, doing hard labour just to provide for their families. Seeing them made me change my mind immediately. I paid them more than I had originally planned because they deserved it. In truth, they were the kind of people you would gladly help even if they hadn’t worked for you.

Before leaving, they quietly said they would be available if we ever had more work for them.

Moments like this remind us to never take Allah’s blessings for granted. While some of us complain about what we don’t have, others have spent their entire lives struggling just to survive.

May Allah never test us with poverty. May He bless our hustle, put barakah in our earnings, and make us among those who help others. Ameen.
