On the holiest day of the year we are attacked at a Manchester synagogue. Our children walk to school behind barbed wire protected by guns. Yet some still answer this atrocity with “what about…” This is my country, the sanctuary my grandfather found after surviving the Holocaust, promising freedom under the rule of law. Today I pray for the victims, thank the brave who responded and wonder if that promise is fading. A community this small cannot stand alone. A damning article on ‘The Irish and Gaza’ written by renowned Israeli historian Benny Morris.

Anyone actually knowledgeable on Israel/Palestine will be aware that Morris’s work is complex and nuanced: he is generally denounced by the extremes on both sides of the Israel/Palestine debate.

No educated person would ever claim that Morris represents the interests of the current Israeli government or that he is a figure who would be inclined to engage in dishonest commentary for personal interests. He is generous with respect to Ireland’s history of antisemitism but writes scathingly on the current state of Irish media:

‘During my visit I read the Irish newspapers and I found the space devoted to the Gaza War and the nature of the coverage truly mind-boggling. It was as if, perversely, the Gaza War was the only crisis on the planet and central to Ireland’s very life and destiny and as if the Palestinians themselves had no part in the descent to the current savagery.’

At Glastonbury yesterday, a band called for “inshallah, from the river to the sea.” The crowd cheered. When I hear that phrase chanted with joy, I feel fear and - whoever you are - so should you.

Most people don’t understand what it means. But it’s been used for decades by those who want to erase Jews from where their language, faith & indigenous culture began. A place that was meant to offer refuge when the rest of the world shut its door.

I’ve spoken out against injustice & unbearable loss. I’ve made work about the ‘Nakba’ & the ongoing trauma of Palestinians.

But “from the river to the sea” doesn’t call for peace.

It calls for a world without Jews. You can stand for Palestinian rights without denying Jewish ones. You can oppose a government without wishing away a people. If your activism leaves no room for someone else’s safety, grief or history it’s not activism. It’s hate.
