The strait was open. He starts a war. The strait closes. The world economy gets fucked. He doesn’t know what he’s doing, he gets bored, he declares victory, and he tells the rest of the world to open the strait, to clean up his mess. He’s such a prick. He’s such a destructive prick.
A few action views of the machining of the loco-tender drawbar on the vertical mill. The slotted end is having the front and back radii bored, followed by skimming the internal faces, and the finally a chamfer is put on the inside of the slot with a home-made radius tool.
With the loco-tender drawbar completed, and also the new drawbar pin half way thru’ machining the opportunity was take to trial fit it into the front dragbox.
After a considerable amount of welding and machining work the loco-tender drawbar is now pretty much finished. Here is a before and after showing how the corroded and worn original has been brought back to life.
@VoughtSikorsky The crank pins are actually between 4.75” and 5” dia for the section which is pressed into the wheel boss, and 4.5” dia at the journal surface where the coupling rod bearings run. Derby drawing office Drawing No. D54-22032 refers…
A nice relaxing machining job for a Sunday was the completion of two more tender axlebox drain plugs. These are in LG2 gunmetal and have a 1” BSP thread.
This weekend the newly completed replacement tender brake shaft was test fitted on the frames, and after the steam brake piston was installed, given a quick air test. Seems to work fine.
Today, the first pair of hornguides was set up into ‘almost final’ position & holes drilled for 16mm temp bolts. These will allow us to get the hornguide down tight against the frames for final positioning & to measure the final machining dimensions.
Who knew that loco boiler foundation rings were made in two halves? Here we see a half having weld preps burned on, followed by welding together of the two halves. Crewe Works c.1926

From everyone at Bitton, we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
Steam loco parts get worn… here we see one of the tender brake hangers before remedial work and weld repair. The first pic shows the wear on the lower boss where the brake pull rods and cross-beams attach. The second shows a nasty BR weld repair on the centre boss area…
