When I was a young teenager in the early to mid 80's, I was a huge fan of Top 40 radio, and there was no bigger station to me as a kid in SF than "Hot Hits 105, KITS." (Later known as Live 105). This was by far my favorite station.
A major part of the station was the KITS Morning Show with Ed Volkman. I thought Ed was a radio genius, doing amazing song parodies and voices.
Those parodies were so good, I wanted a copy for myself. So I sent the station a blank cassette and a sob story letter about moving away but wanting to take the songs with me. (I wasn't really moving. I was just some goofball 14 year old. Forgive me.)
Shortly, I received not only that cassette back, filled with the song parodies, but a typed letter signed by Ed thanking me for listening and wishing me luck. I've held onto that letter and cassette to this day.
Ed eventually moved on from SF following a format change and many years later, I wondered "Geez, what ever happened to Ed Volkman?" So in a few short clicks later, I found out he was doing really well in the Chicago area and still on the air!
I DM'd Ed and introduced myself. "Hey Ed, remember that kid who was moving to Montreal and wanted tapes of Big Bubba and Mildred Hornswinkle singing? That's me!"
Ed could not have been nicer in his reply and was really appreciative of me reaching out. He even asked me for a copy of that tape, which I will digitize and send to him this offseason.
Radio heroes? For me, it starts with Ed (Eddie) Volkman.
Good luck with everything, Ed! And I promise to get you that audio!
Hey, anyone who might’ve currently been listening to me on The 967, today was my last day with the company, and I am another unfortunate casualty of the radio industry. Luckily, Thanks for all the love and I’m gonna turn off my 3 AM alarm for a little bit!
Do you have a 12U baseball player in your family? My son's 12U team, based here in SF, is looking for a few more players to form a Cooperstown team for 2027.
If you have interest, please hit me up on the side using the DM/chat function. We're looking for a few more 12U players now!
If you're watching tonight's #SFGiants - Padres game on @AppleTV , you can listen to our Giants radio broadcast overlayed on the video by selecting AUDIO OPTIONS -> VISITING RADIO (Giants broadcast). Jon and Dave on the call tonight, btw.
Tonight's the first time in Yamamoto's MLB career he's allowed 3 Home Runs in a game. Incredibly all 3 to #Giants 8-9 hitters.
#9 hitter-Eric Haase is the first player to hit 2 HR's in the same game off Yamamoto. #Dodgers
#SFGiants game is on @AppleTV tonight. If you want to hear our radio broadcast with Jon and Shawn Estes, go to the audio options and choose the visiting radio feed. I assume it will be there...
Thanks for all the tremendous feedback! It was fun putting it together. And believe me, there was a lot left on the cutting room floor. Maybe we’ll do a director’s cut at some point. 😀
In the meantime, here it is on demand…
