@provokedpedago1 Mine weren't interested though we read with them daily. But by the end of reception they both could. Phonics is magic. I teach secondary and am in awe of the progress they made in that year. It's sad when kids get to us and still can't read. They can't access much at all.

@AVisserFuray I don't bring my laptop home wknds. I work 4 days. The only time I bring it home is on my day 'off'. I don't mind working that day as I leave within 20 min of the end of school. I just don't do a lot of stuff. Disclaimer...you don't get promoted this way.

@MrZachG Give teachers enough free time (especially at the start of the day) that they aren't desperately scrabbling around to get organised in between lessons. No judgment on your school - but this is what sometimes stops me doing it.

@mrsrsquires My experience of marking is that the pay per paper is so low and the deadlines so tight that you have to mark ridiculous quickly to get it done and be earning a decent hourly rate. Boards need to pay better to get better quality marking.

@Mr_SmithEd I'm not aware of any research either. It just makes sense to me to get them to think about what they are actually doing. As soon as they get to a level physics and beyond you'd struggle with a triangle!
