Hong Kong’s new law allows police officers to require “any specified person” to provide the password or other means to decrypt an electronic device. Failure to comply is a criminal offence, punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and up to one year in prison. Providing false information, including a fake password, can result in a fine of up to $500,000 and up to three years in prison.
The continued expansion of national security laws should leave us in no doubt – there is no ‘new normal’ in #HongKong, just ever-intensifying repression.
There must be pressure from international governments and bodies to halt this continued slide into authoritarianism.
